PARENTS in the North East are saving money on holidays after a travel agent offers discounts on all breaks taken out of term time. Hays Travel has joined forces with local councils across the North East to offer families a 10 per cent discount as an incentive not to take children out of school during term-time when holiday prices are often cheaper. Hays Travel first launched a school holiday discount scheme in association with Sunderland City Council in 2004. By choosing to book their holidays out of school term time and to make sure their children make the most of precious lessons, parents in Sunderland have reaped the rewards financially, as well as directly contributing to Sunderland schools having less absence due to holidays than the national average. After the initial success of the Sunderland partnership, Hays extended the discount scheme into other areas of the North East including North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham, Darlington, Stockton, Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, where the discounts will be available until at least August 2012. Last year 630 families made use of the 10% discount, with an average saving of £263 per family, making a total saving of more than £165,000 for families in the North East. John Hays, Managing Director and Founder of Hays Travel, said: "The success of the scheme speaks for itself. Less children in the North East are being taken out of school for holidays as a result of the discount on offer, which is great news." m/f Keith Moore, Director of Children’s Services, Sunderland City Council, said: “Sunderland’s continued partnership with Hays Travel has enabled the city to keep the subject of holidays in term time high profile. “Recent figures show that in both the city’s primary and secondary schools, families are taking less time off in term time without consent, when compared to the national average. We hope this trend continues.” Improvements in school attendance levels have been proven to have a beneficial impact on raising achievement and attainment, reducing school exclusion, improving transition between key stages and decreasing youth crime and the potential for social exclusion. Children already have 13 weeks holiday a year. By taking an additional two weeks, children are out of school for almost a quarter of the year.
