Repeated use, physical stress and the alternating contraction and expansion from exposure to hot and cold water take their toll, and cause the piece to corrode. The first thing you might notice, when your basket strainer corrodes, is leaky water under the sink. However, a leaky basket strainer is only one of the plumbing problems that can cause water leakage under the sink. Once the strainer basket and tail piece are removed you want to put the new custom fitted tail piece into the top of the copper piping under the sink. Next, fit the strainer basket into the drain hole of the sink, from above. The lips of the basket will keep it from falling into the drain hole, however, before actually inserting the basket, you will want to add a ring of plumbers putty around the underside of the lips of the strainer basket to make a nice seal and prevent leaking. The rest of the installation takes place under the sink. Tighten the nuts and washers that connect the copper piping tail piece and basket strainer. Don't over tighten anything as that may cause cracking. When everything is in place, turn on the water and check for leaks.
