Choosing scuba equipment

By: Brad15 Greentree15

When Scuba diving in Sydney having the right equipment can make all the difference. Many people decide not to invest in equipment but hire it. Given that most Sydney Scuba diving shops do have good quality hire equipment this may appear as a good idea but here is a list of pros and cons.
Advantaged of hire equipment
1. You do not need to service your equipment. Serving your equipment should be done annually, the cost will vary depending on the brand of the equipment and wether it has a warranty on parts. A word of warning equipment purchased online will in most cases void warranty especially on any parts for life warranty.
2. You do not need to worry about storing equipment. These days with so many sports room to store all your sporting equipment can be an issue.
3. Initial outlay. To hire equipment can cost any were between $55 a day to $110 depending on what you are hiring. To purchase your scuba equipment may cost between $1500-$3500.
4. Washing equipment. Depending on where you hire your gear from, but most centres do have a washing area to rinse off equipment after a dive, ideal if you live in a unit!
5. Luggage considerations. If you are travelling or back packing carrying the minimum luggage is always a good idea, so it makes sense to hire at the destination.
Advantages of owning your equipment
1. Purchace your Mask, Snorkel and fins. Let’s face it to hire a pair of boots that 100 of other people have used can be, well a bit off putting let alone a mask that has been used by 100 of people with different faces. In most cases the mask is a personal item a bit like your own tooth brush, you just do not want to share it!
2. Having the correct weight. Given once you have your own wetsuit you can confirm the same amount of weight for every dive. Your wetsuit is a BIG factor in comfort.
3. Dive computer. Just about every dive computer is different and has different functions; purely from a safety point of view having your own computer will give you a better understanding of bottom times and accent rates. All this leads to a safer dive and time away from the decompression chamber!
4. Setting your equipment up. Having your own equipment means that you can have it set up just the way you like it and leave it that way, buckles clips all can be adjusted to suit you. When hiring it is unlikely that you will have the same set of gear more than once.
5. More affordable in the long run. Given the running around and overall costs and the fact that you can pay off your equipment interest free purchasing does make sense. In 12 months doing 2 dives every other weekend you would have payed your equipment off.
So there you have it hiring your equipment verse purchasing. In my years as an Instructor I have only seen people benefit from investing in their own equipment. All this will Lead to more diving and more comfortable diving. Sydney Scuba diving is a great sport and most enjoyable make the most of your time underwater and be comfortable and safe.
