When it comes to promotional products it is always worth thinking outside the box. All too often do we come across the same products time and time again. I can guess the first thing you are thinking of when thinking about promotional gifts: pens, mugs, key rings will be the things that spring to mind. It does not need to be like this however as there is a multitude of products to choose from and so this is the perfect chance for a company to really get some different attention and be playful rather than portray the very predictable mundane corporate feel. I have worked for many different companies over the years and due to this I have been to many exhibitions and conferences. One of my most memorable was at an exhibition called Ad:Tech exhibition in London’s Olympia in 2008. I was there to have a scope around and check out different companies and affiliates however when I go to exhibitions I do feel that the free promotional products are one of the major draws (I have just read that back and it makes me seem quite sad but it’s true!). I always end up with hundreds of pens and this day was no exception. This exhibition was a year ago now and in all honesty I could not tell you which company any of the promotional pens I received where from which company. I did use the pens but when I was given them at the exhibition I had no interest in the company to begin with and my opinion is a pen is a pen – it offers nothing more than a writing instrument. Interestingly the exhibitions and companies I do remember offered promotional products that stood out and were different and to this day I still remember these companies. One of the exhibition stands belonged to Ebay and the promotional gifts that they were handing out were Rubix Cubes. Granted that a company as big as Ebay is quite memorable and may have biased my memory of them somewhat however the Rubix Cube interested me and cut through the bulk of other promotional products that day. It was different and interesting and it still sits on my desk to this day whereas all the pens I have got have been either chewed to bits (my job is stressful!) or been thrown out. So you see from this example alone it is worth thinking outside the box and offering something different. Of course a Rubix Cube is a rather expensive promotional product and not all companies are as big and mighty as Ebay however I think it illustrates my point quite well. It is about catching people off guard and differentiating yourselves and if you follow the same pattern Ebay did then your business can have a very good day at your next exhibition.
