They are barely friends, and nearly enemies. With courtroom antics worthy of the best seasons of "Ally McBeal" and a defense attorney, Billy Flynn, whom we can easily imagine defending O.J. Simpson or Scott Peterson in a long dramatic trial that produces daily headlines, Chicago can be read as a condemnation of a fame-obsessed celebrity-worshiping aspect of our culture that has only become more entrenched in our value system in the years since the musical was first produced.
