Chicago Blackhawks History And Tickets

By: Gen Wright

The year was 1926 and in Chicago, a dream was born. Known as the Chicago Black Hawks, the team joined the National Hockey League (NHL) and formed a part of the first expansion of hockey into the U.S. That same year, three other teams were added. The Black Hawks started off on the right foot by enlisting players who were from the Western Canada Hockey League's team known as the Portland Rosebuds. The Rosebuds had folded the season prior, making it simple to transition the majority of the players to the newly formed Chicago Black Hawks.

The Black Hawks made their playing debut on November 17 with a fantastic crowd of 9,000. The team beat the Toronto St. Pat's 4-1. The team's first owner, Frederic McLaughlin, apparently named the team after Chief Black Hawk, a prominent figure in Illinois history and the 86th Infantry Division of World War I which was nicknamed the "Blackhawk Division". The team saw some unfavorable activity although they did land in third place for the first season. Head coach Pete Muldoon was fired and reportedly was said to have put a curse on the team. The season that followed, which was 1927-28, served to stand as the worst record for the league. The Black Hawks finished first in 1967, breaking the curse and it was revealed that a writer made up the story to meet a deadline.

There were some years that saw the team hit the cellar in terms of rankings but by 1970, the Black Hawks had rebounded back up to first place. Much credit was given to Tony Esposito who posted 15 shutouts that season. The 70's represented an era when the team learned the importance of playing more defensively, especially after having the lowest team goal-against averages in the late 60's. The 70's were also when the NHL created four divisions. The Black Hawks won the division title several times during this period but their average was sometimes below .500.

As the 80's approach the team went through many changes in coaches and players, making it the most rowdy season in terms of playing and management direction. Mike Keenan came along and whether his style was appreciated or not, he formed the hardest working and best conditioned set of players in the entire NHL at that time. The 80's were also when the team changed the name to the Chicago Blackhawks; a name that stands to this day. As the Blackhawks forged forward into the 90's, their defensive strategies and thoroughly instilled work habits would be the foundation to lead the team to many victories in the future.

The list of award winners on the Blackhawks team stretches on for miles for the Blackhawks. The list includes the Stanley Cup, President's Trophy, Campbell Bowl, Jack Adams Award, Hart Memorial Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, James Norris Memorial Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, Calder Memorial Trophy, Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, Vezina Trophy, William M. Jennings Trophy, Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, Lester Patrick Trophy and the Prince of Wales Trophy.

The Blackhawks Hall of Fame list stretches even longer with many notable names in Blackhawk history on display at the hockey hall of fame in BCE Place at 30 Yonge Street in Toronto. The most recent inductee was Denis Savard in 2000 for his feats in 1980-90 and 1995-1997. The United Center hosts all of the home games for the Blackhawks. Various levels offer ticket prices for virtually all budgets and tastes from luxury suites to in your face seats that go up for auction right at the glass on the benches, which are to die for.
