Cheap Web Hosting – Is It Worth It

By: Peter Brittain

Like all material things that may be available in expensive and cheaper versions, web hosting is also provided at far cheaper prices. Again, one’s requirement defines the price that is to be paid, as monthly charges. Cheap web hosting can be available through resellers. These firms lease out server space from the original owner and offer it to a third party to set up their websites. This brings down the rates, to far lower levels than what is prevalent in the market.

Reseller's business thrives through a study of market demand and caters to specific areas of demand. Other services, like SSL certificates, search engine optimization and domain name registration are made available. Resellers concentrate on scalability and try to make maximum use of the space purchased from the host. However, such services are not suitable for all sites, especially when the site is required to be running with minimum down time. The client deals with the reseller and not with the host, making it difficult to judge the quality of server uptime guarantees. To make maximum use of the available space, the seller may offer different sections to complete incompatible sites that vary in Internet flow. Sites that experience a heavy traffic may impede the accessibility of others. Besides, unscrupulous resellers may not actually provide the amount of disk space, data transfer speeds and mail accounts agreed under the contract.

Most of the hosting companies offering services at less than dollars 6 a month are located in areas with a high density of customers. Customers situated far across the world may be tempted to use their services, due to the high hosting charges quoted by their local hosts. However, not all sites are well served by these service providers. It would be difficult for an ecommerce site to locate at a server overseas, while targeting the customers based locally. The number of router hops either to reach the website or from the site to the user may decrease the data transfer rates to below than what was promised in the contract.
Keeping a tab on the services offered becomes all the more difficult, when located at great distances.

Reliability is the key to maintain a well performing website. Hosts, who provide cheap services may go kaput, if they are not able to generate enough revenues or have unused space lying with them. Most of those, offering cheap services offer discounts for yearly payments of the service charges. Such tactics show, they bank upon their ability to rake enough money in a single go. Especially, when a few of the customers decide to go away, or do not pay up due to bad services, the whole server may have to be shut down. Many of those offering cheap services, increase charges when they meet their target number of customers. This stimulates an exodus towards others, who offer cheaper rates. Cheaper hosting services are best for those, who do not depend on their websites for business generation. It is also for those, who need to set up multiple sites to streamline their businesses and for those, who have little options than to go for cheap services.

Cheap web hosting also suffers from band-width availability. Hosting agencies that quote far lower monthly rent attract a huge number of web masters, leading to a crowding of available web space. This compromises the quality service that is claimed to be offered. The decreased data transfer speed makes it sensible to go for a higher priced service, where bandwidth is assured and well-maintained.
