By: Gradlein

An illness where your tooth is in pain is called odontalgy, commonly known as toothache. Problems in the tooth or jaw are usually the primary causes of toothache. Here is a list of some of the causes of toothache:

* Dental cavity. Dental cavity is a condition wherein bacterial processes damage hard tooth structure.

* Gum Disease. Gum disease is the second cause of toothache. Also called gingivitis, gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, creating tartar that forms on the teeth. Bacteria can cause gum infection, swelling, pain, and further bone destruction.

* The emergence of wisdom teeth. Third molars consist of mandibular and maxillary, and is commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They appear when a person is between age 17 and 25 or older and supposedly gained some wisdom, thus its name.

* Cracked Tooth Syndrome. "Cracked Tooth Syndrome", or CTS, is a medical condition wherein a crack in the tooth is present without associated cavities or gum disease. When children eat something hard their teeth can crack or break since their teeth are usually fragile.

* Impaction & Eruption. Impaction is a medical term to describe different types of blockage, it can also refer to teeth pressing together. Eruption of a tooth is a process where the tooth grows out of the gums covering it which can be the cause for pain. Impacted teeth can be treated with medication and antibiotics that could lessen the pain we experienced in our teeth.
