There is a new form of advertising medium in town: car wraps. As the name implies, car wraps involve the wrapping of a car in advertising material. This is a new medium that advertisers and their creative agencies are exploring to bring the selling messages to the target market. In the past, advertising has been confined to mostly the home or a fixed place. The target market will watch the TV commercials on their television sets right at home, they will browse through magazines and newspapers at the living room or at the doctor’s office, and they will check out internet advertisement at their desks. Billboards are considered outdoor advertising, but they are mainly rooted at a single spot with the ideal number of foot and vehicle traffic. But car wraps are opening another avenue that advertising has not explored before-mobile billboards that offer a lot of creative freedom for the advertisers. There had been several remarkable executions of vehicle wraps, including the Crystal Pepsi ad in the early 1990’s and the Holiday Inn Hotels in San Diego train coaches. These campaigns were eye-catching and contributed a significant increase to the sales of the advertisers who staged this campaign. The result of the vehicle wraps were not only quantifiable through spikes in their sales report, but also cemented their reputation and “brand recall” in the minds of their consumers and target market. However, vehicle wraps-especially the ones used by Pepsi and the Holiday Inn Hotels-can be very expensive. The companies mentioned above are worth billions and therefore can afford to shell out a substantial advertising budget for those memorable vehicle wraps. Smaller companies who wish to get their selling messages out there where the target market can fully digest it will often not have a budget to spend for vehicle wraps. But there is another way that advertisers with a modest campaign budget can replicate the success of the Pepsi and Holiday Inn Hotels vehicle wraps campaign, thanks to car wraps. Printing out the material that will be used to wrap the vehicle will be less costly because there is less area to be covered. To wrap an entire bus, one will need enough material to cover two to three cars. An entire train coach or a truck is a lot bigger. Therefore, choosing car wraps over vehicle wraps is a cheaper and more convenient option that a small company can explore.
