Car Stinks? May Mean Trouble

By: Wendy Stevens

There's nothing more delightful than a scent of a new car. For some reason the leather and plastic blend together to make an unique fragrance. And then for some people this is not enough and they end up purchasing an air freshener that smells like strawberries or vanilla. This all is great given that all of us have their own likes and dislikes. But what happens when you start smelling something in your car that you never smelled before. We are going to give attention to how certain smells that unexpectedly appear could mean a possible problem for your car.

Among the first problems that pop into your head is a sick sweet smell. This kind of smell signifies there is a leak in your coolant system. Should it be a drip in your coolant system, make sure it is fixed right away. One further thing you might notice is that this smell is really potent. If you notice that the smell is really strong this in most cases indicates that your heater core may be leaking in side the car. You will have to have this problem looked at and fixed because the fumes are dangerous if inhaled for too long.

You could also notice that you are able to smell the exhaust in the car. It is fairly possible that there is a hole in your exhaust system. If the smell is very detectable, it could mean that you have got holes in the floorboard due to rust or the doors are not sealing very well. This is a circumstance that should be fixed right away considering that the fumes are very dangerous to inhale.

A little while back, I went to the gas station to fill my tank and when I left, I was able to still smell the gas. It didn't worry me at the outset, but the next day I could still smell gas. It turned out that I had formed a leak on the topside part of my fuel tank. It is probably the most dangerous smell due to the fact any spark could possibly trigger a fire. And I don't need to tell you what occurs when your gasoline tank catches on fire. So if you are constantly smelling gasoline inside your car, get your car looked at immediately.

Finally, you may encounter a spoiled egg odor. It is in all likelihood that the odor is caused by a stopped up catalytic converter. This too suggests that the exhaust is not being expelled properly which could result in some serious damage to your car. So when you have that rotten egg smell, bring your car in and have it checked out.

There are more odd smells that you might come across while you use your car. Keep in mind this is your car therefore if you smell something unusual there is probably a problem and you should get it to the shop.
