Cabin Beds - How To Save Space In The Kids Bedroom

By: Joyce Mack

When we decided to re-arrange and redecorate the children’s bedrooms, we considered them to be old enough to be consulted on their tastes. The youngest, James, wanted a themed room with mediaeval castles and such, whilst Alex, the elder cared only about his precious computer. However one thing they were both adamant about was they needed bunk beds – so their friends could stay over!

I’ve always been rather sceptical of bunk beds myself. When I see them in friends’ houses I always think they look a bit of a mess. Apart from that, James is too young to sleep in an upper bunk, which I knew he would be forever trying to do. What none of us knew really was what other options were available, so we decided to go online and take a look.

I knew the most important thing was to ensure they had good quality mattresses and I intended to buy those separately and choose them myself. However I wanted to give the boys the freedom to explore the different frames and decide which they liked, without too much influence from us.

Nevertheless, I was quite happy when Alex started looking closely at the cabin bed range because I knew the extra storage would be very useful. Cabin beds give the feel and look of a bunk bed, but are not as high and offer masses of extra drawer, shelving and cupboard space underneath. The one Alex liked even had a pull out desk – too small for a computer, but perfectly adequate for doing homework.

For James, the younger son, we came across quite a range of themed beds painted in bright, primary colours, which we knew he would like. They were shaped as racing cars, helicopters, fire engines etc. We also looked at a range of captain’s beds which looked very well made and stored a second bed underneath - ideal for those stay over friends, but these didn’t offer the same interest. Perhaps were more suitable for older children.

As for the bunk beds, I never imagined you could get such a range of styles. Some were themed, some included storage under the lower bunk and some had drop down painted canopies for privacy and adventure. You could see why children would like them and it probably would make bedtime much easier, but the appeal was definitely for younger children, and Alex considered himself too old for such games. There were also loft beds, which had an upper bunk but with futons or wardrobes in the space where the lower bunk would be. I imagined they would be useful in kids’ rooms where space was at a premium.

I was pleased with my sons’ choices for themselves - they both chose cabin beds but of completely different designs. Placing the order was easy and delivery was free, which was a real bonus. I was glad I came across Clever Clicker and would recommend the site to anyone looking for beds or other furniture ideas.
