For centuries, the traditional educational method has been what presenters prefer to call the “sage to the stage” approach-where the content expert lectures to the audience, who sit passively and additionally listen, as if knowledge was something to become poured over their heads and simply absorbed. It’s one-way conversation and, although it may be entertaining and informative, it only rarely brings about measurable change or stage. And in the age of YouTube and podcasts and Twitter and eBooks, it may possibly make the event experience appear suspiciously unnecessary. Instead, I’ve learned that the simplest way to use the time we have together is to avoid spending an excessive amount of my own time being the “sage on the stage” and play more to a role as the designer and facilitator connected with an experience created for all of them.
