Some of them were people who had been involved with Internet Marketing for a little while and some of them were people who were just getting started with their first website. I have met a lot of people who are successful at making money online, and unfortunately I have seen some who have failed and gave up. These people just jump right in with a vision of what their website could look like and have no goals, budgets, or plans in place for how to make their website get to the place they want it to be. I figured in this post I will give those who are about to start their first website a little bit of advice to help them to come up with a plan on how to get started the right way so that they will be able to taste some of the success that so many others have had with their online efforts. BEFORE YOU GET STARTED Before you get started building your first website you will want to make sure that you take the time to come up with a plan on how your website is going to be ran. You have got to treat each website you build like it is a business in order to see the most success. You cannot simply buy a domain name and hosting then put up a website and hope for the best. There is a fair amount of planning that should be done so that you do not come to a point where you get stuck and do not know what to do next. PLANNING FOR SUCCESS One of the things that you will want to take the time to do is plan out content creation. You will want to figure out if you are going to create the content yourself or if you are going to hire someone to create the content that you need for your website, blog, web 2.0 sites, and article directories. If you are going to write the content yourself then chances are you probably have a list of topics that you plan to discuss. Make sure that you write those topics down so that you will not forget them when you are trying to think of things to write about. If you are going to be outsourcing the content creation to a professional company then you will want to make sure that you have a list of topics that you want to have your content created on. You cannot ask the company that is creating the content what they think should be written about next. Most companies will either laugh at you or take advantage of you and come up with hundreds of topics and charge you more money for writing about each one than what they would have charged if you would have come up with the list on your own. Basically when you are doing this type of planning you need to think about your goals for your website. You need to either have a goal to make money from your website or to give information from your website to the people who are looking for it. It is a lot harder to do both than it is to just focus on one of these things. If your website is one that you want to make money from then you will want to make it clear where people can to go purchase a product or sign up for an affiliate promotion that you are offering. You will not want to give a lot of information on your website since people easily get lost in the sea of information and may forget why they came to your site to begin with. You will want to give all of your information off-site through a web 2.0 site like a Squidoo lens or through a Blog that you have set up. You can then direct the people who read your information in those places to come to your website to buy your product or take advantage of the affiliate offers you have. Finally, you will want to have a set of keywords that you plan to focus on to get your website ranked in Google. Unless you are only planning to do offline marketing and do not care about all of the free traffic that you can get from Google and the other search engines you will want to find some keywords that people are searching for so that you can focus on trying to get ranked as high as you can for them. There are a couple of free keyword tools that you can use to do this which are Google Keyword Tool and Wordtracker Keyword Tool. You will also find several different paid keyword tools such as Keyword Country Keyword Tool which are great for finding keywords to get ranked for. You want to make sure that you spend time trying to find keywords that you want to focus on so that you will be able to include them in the content that you are writing or having written. STARTING A WEBSITE WITH PARTNERS If you have formed a partnership with a few people who have the same interests as you do then you may have an easier time getting everything done that needs to be done when you are working online. You will want to plan and discuss several different aspects of your Internet Marketing business with your partners so that you have a clear and concise plan in place before you get started with your first website. One thing that you will want to discuss is a weekly or monthly budget that you are going to need to have for your website. This budget should include things that you are going to need to make your website rise to the top so that it can start making your team money. You will need to put things such as outsourcing, advertising, software, and other things that you will need to make your website perform well. You will need to figure out exactly how much each member of the team will be able to contribute financially so that you know how much is available to be spent on a weekly basis. You will also want to make sure that each member knows their role in the website. Sometimes each member wants to have a part in the development of the website so that they can feel like they are contributing their fair share and sometimes they only want to contribute from a financial standpoint. Make sure that everyone has a clear understanding of what their part in the website will be so that you will be able to work together to achieve the goals that you have come up with. Setting up weekly or monthly meetings is another thing that should be done if you are working with a team. If everyone who is a part of the Internet Marketing business is located in the same area then you may want to physically meet with each other to discuss the goals and progress of the website and come up with a strategy that will always keep you moving forward. If everyone who is a part of the team is not located in the same area then you may want to have a web conference with them. There are several instant messaging systems that you can have a voice conference through that will allow everyone to speak their opinion. Skype is an excellent choice that will allow for you to get together over the internet and have a meeting. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN OUTSOURCING If you are not savvy when it comes to all of the computer technology that is available and would rather hire someone who can take care of the work for you when it comes to writing content for your website, building web 2.0 websites, creating blog posts, link building, or writing articles for ezine directories there are some things you should know. The people who do this type of work usually have a long list of clients that they do work for. They are running a business the same as any other business that you go to, and usually only have time to take your order, complete your order, and answer any questions that you may have about the work that they have completed for you. These people do not have time to answer every question that you may have about the direction of your website and what should be done next. That part of the Internet Marketing business is up to you. You will find Website Consultants who will consult you on the direction of your website as well as other things related to your website, but you will have to pay them a fee for the advice they give you. This advice will cost you somewhere around $200 per hour to give. The reason that a person who handles outsourcing work does not have time to answer all of your questions is because they have a lot that they need to get done during the days that they work. Every time they stop to answer an email that someone has sent them they are losing money. You will find that most of the companies who do outsourcing work will not even respond to your emails unless it has something to do with an order that you are placing or have placed in the past. These people are very knowledgeable about Internet Marketing and may be a better option for getting advice from, but you will have to pay them for the time that they give to you. FAILING TO PLAN IS PLANNING TO FAIL Have you ever heard of this old expression? Nowhere in the world is this more true than on the internet. You can see from the things that are mentioned in this post that there is a lot of planning to be done whether you are trying to start your first website or you are trying to start your 100th website. If you do not take the time to plan out everything and set some goals for your website you are doomed to fail when it comes to making money online. There are a lot of other things that you will need to make sure that you take the time to plan, but these things should help you to get started and help the wheels to get started turning in your head.
