Build Portable Chicken Coops Easily

By: Jenny Gilbert

Whether you are building a small ark, a hutch, or a tractor the ability to turn it into a portable chicken coop is a huge advantage for some people, especially those with smaller back yards. When you are farming just a couple of chickens it is an ideal solution. You get the fresh eggs, your lawn manicured and the poop for your garden and they get a fresh environment every day - a win win for all!

However there are a couple of things that you'll need to consider before you go ahead and build your own portable chicken coop.

'I like to move it move it'

How easy is it going to be to move? You will have to move it at least every 2 days so if it is awkward, tedious or just too heavy you won't be inclined to move it and you may as well build a permanent structure.

This is how we roll;

Putting wheels on your portable chicken coop is a fabulous idea - make sure that they are stable, secure, tough and replaceable! Skateboards make awesome coop wheels - just don't let on to your son! Also don't forget to put in some sort of brake when the coop is set up so that your coop doesn't roll back down the hill with the first gust of wind.

Push me - pull you;

When you look to build your portable chicken coop you'll find that most plans require you to push it. This is fine in some instances, but it may be worthwhile looking at plans that allow you to pull the coop along as well.

Size does matter;

It stands to reason that the bigger the coop that you build, the more awkward it will be to move. Most build a portable chicken coop that is around 3 feet x 8 feet which is fine for most people to move, but if you want a larger coop then think about whether you can build one where the house separates from the run. This will allow it to be moved in two pieces.

Some larger portable chicken coops can also have fixtures that will allow you to hook them onto a vehicle for easy towing to their new site.

A last thought;
Chickens produce way more poop than you think, that is one of the reasons why it is really important to move them often. This is also a factor that you will need to take into consideration when you decide to build your portable chicken coop. You will need to work out how to collect the poo easily and how to move the coop without having to step through the poop!
