It seems as though all the fun and excitement has been taken out of traveling with all of the rules and fees that went into effect in 2009. This is precisely why a road trip can be just the thing to put the fun back into vacations while saving you a bundle of money. The five reasons why a road trip can save you money include; Split transportation expenses, no baggage fees, small towns are less expensive to visit, you can bring along your own drinks and snacks, and you don’t need a rental car.
Split Transportation Expenses:
Get in the car with a couple friends or family members and you can split the expense of gas between everyone. You can’t do that with any other form of transportation. If you obtain a car that gets great gas mileage and a road trip for a weekend for four can cost less than $50 a person in gas, depending, of course, on the destination.
No Baggage Fees:
There is simply no excuse to pack everything you own when you go on a road trip. However, since most airlines charge at least $25 per suitcase, four people traveling together can save $100 or more alone in baggage fees. In addition, there is the fact that when the luggage is placed in the car’s trunk it is pretty much assured that the luggage will arrive at the destination along with the owner at the same time which is another headache that is prevented, as well.
Small Towns Are Less Expensive To Visit:
During a road trip, it is always possible to visit locations that are not serviced by airlines, or sometimes even by train or bus. So don’t overlook the possibility of visiting a town that is out of the way while you are on a road trip. They usually have their own charm. In addition, attractions such as restaurants and hotels can be considerably less expensive as well. A hotel chain that usually costs $100 a night in a larger city might cost half that per night in a small town. Also a family owned diner can provide some of the best meals you have ever eaten for about the same cost as a meal at a fast food restaurant.
Bring Your own Drinks And Snacks:
Take a cooler with you on your road trip and pack it with ice. Put some sandwich fixings, soft drinks, and water in it and four people can easily save on dining expenses while on the road. You should also consider investing in a small fridge that plugs into the lighter outlet which will save you money on ice if traveling in a larger vehicle.
No Need for a Rental Car:
You don’t need to spend money on a rental car if you drive your own vehicle on your road trip. If you factor in the cost of the rental fee with taxes and any other fees, you could save several hundred dollars which you will then be able to put back into a travel budget. Probably one of the best reasons for a road trip is spending time with friends and family on the journey while creating some unforgettable memories.
