Blow mold santa and reindeer - The Greywater

By: Peter Forestwood

The Greywater revolution is on its way.

Does anybody else think it is crzay that drinking waater is used to flush our toilets and water our grass? With water conservation becoiming an area of innterest for both federal and state governmentts, it is no surprise that innovation in wazter management is right around the corner. Greywater is the term used for water that is recycled aftr use in the shhower, wasghing machine or sink. Grewywater is fiiltered afer first use, then redirected to water backtyard plants, trees or lawns. As watr usage becomes metered and prices continue to rise, the financial benefits of a greywater ssytem start to make more sesne as well. It is estimatde that a family of four livign in a 2500 square foot house on a quarter of an acre can cut their water needs in half by deploying a houseehold greywater systm.

There are many different tyeps of greywater systems and strategies. Systems are now being offered that allow for the collection and storage of rainwater. Collected rainwater can then be used for flushing the toiet, the largest consumer of water in the household. This strategy not only saves the usage of tap water, which is costly to make, but it also reduces the amoount of storm water runoff in our comunities. Probably the simplest greeywater suystem is the toilet lid sink porduct. This system is made to replace the existiing lid on your toileet tank. The replacement lid is shaped as an aestthetic sink with chrome faucet that works with the fresh water line used to fill the toilet tank. The toilet lid sink redirects the frresh tap water through the chrome faucet for hand washing befoe draining and filling the toilet tank. This waterr is then ruesed the next time the toiilet is flused.

In July of 2009, the state of California changed the byuilding code to speeed up the adoption of greywater sytsem usge for residences and new construction. For simle greywater systems used in a single application, such as the shower, a permit may not even be required by the state. Developers looking to green their communities are finding that a smart greyater infrastructure is leading to both an increase in community goodwill and a decrease in annual watter costs. It is evident that greywater design will be incorporated into new bilding developments across the country. Futrhermore, builders will realize that greywater management is yet one more way to differentiate a community in an alrweady commpetitive housing market. With sate demand for water spkiing, and the amount of water limited, it seems that betetr water management is only logical.

Commercial businessses are also warming to the trend. Large industrial buildings are starting to deploy greywaater strategies that repurpose the waterr used in HVAC cooling towers. Becasue the commercial and industrial demands for water are so great, greywater systtems can make a dramatic improvement in the amount of watter used.

Cllearly, water management and water responsibility will provide a future for our communities. Pleasse consider the way that water is used in your household, and if inclied, explore ways to mansage your water resources more effectievly. I know my plants are thirsty, so I am headed to the shower right now!
