The typical definition goes like this: a night vision device is an optical instrument that allows images to be produced in levels of light approaching total darkness. A night vision unit includes an image intensifier tube, water resistant housing and a mounting system. These night vision devices were first used in World War 2. Later their demand and usage increased widely and with technological evolution, several generations of night vision equipment have been introduced. This equipment is of great use especially during war as it enables night fighters to see, maneuver and shoot at night or during period of reduced visibility. Army generally uses two kinds of night vision devices- image intensifiers and thermals. Image intensifiers are work on light amplification principal and must have some light available for it to function. In case of availability of minimum light, these devices can amplify them from 2000 to 5000 times. Thermal forward infrared detectors are also known as sensors. These work by sensing the difference in temperature between object and its environment. Night vision goggles are a kind of electro optical devices that intensify existing light instead of relying on a light source. These devices are highly sensitive and can amplify available light by thousand times using electronic means. Thus they display battle field to soldiers. There are several companies that are manufacturing night vision goggles, the most famous among them being ATN, Bushnell, Night optics and Night Owl. These allow the user to see his surroundings clearly even in complete darkness. Besides being used in military, these goggles have proved to be excellent equipment for camping. These goggles can be used for: • Wildlife Observation: Wildlife observation is an excellent and challenging hobby. Most animals tend to flee or get frightened when observed using a flash light. This is when Night vision goggles come handy. They allow campers to observe animals at night in their natural habitat without disturbing or being noticed by animals. • Fishing: If you have any plans to fish while camping, make sure you carry a set of night vision goggles with you. Since a pair of goggles can help you enjoy an extremely quite, hands free angling. • Repairs: One of the most common situations faced by people while camping is handling minor tent repairs in the middle of night. Night vision goggles can be very helpful in such a situation as you can attend to the repair work without holding a flashlight in your hand. • While passing through the woods, there is a great chance of stumbling into tree line or tripping over rocks. A pair of night vision goggles can aid in hassle free travel as you will be able to traverse terrain as if you are travelling in a broad daylight.
