Becoming a Social Security Lawyer

If you opt to help beneficiaries of social security system to get what is really due to them, then it would be great for you to become a social security lawyer. But before you start helping other people out, you need to equip yourself with the necessary requirements on becoming a lawyer.

Overall it would take approximately 7-9 years in order of going to school before you can get a Juris Doctor degree. The first four years will be spent on getting an undergraduate study from any 4-year degree of your choice. Then, the succeeding years will be dedicated in going to law school. If you are studying law full-time, it would just take you 3 years to finish it up. However, if you are working and would want to study law, then you will finish law school within 4-5 years.

Just a word of precaution, be sure you are studying in one out of the many law schools in the country that are highly accredited by American Bar Association. It is because most often it is a pre-requisite that you need to be a graduate of an ABA accredited school before you can take the bar exam.

In Between Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

It would be best to start preparing for your career through engaging in various working experience. A good start would be using your summer time and apply for summer jobs that would enable you to use your undergraduate studies or what you have learn in law school to action.

A good place for an aspiring social security lawyer to take work is from a company, particularly in the human resource or payroll department. These will be the perfect avenues for you to learn more about how social security system plays an integral role on an employee's life. Apart from that, there are other things that you will learn like how the social security payroll deduction is computed, etc. This will in turn give you an idea in the future how much an ordinary employee will more or less should get out of his or her SSS.

Skills and Work Experience

With regard to skills and work experience, nothing beats having to work in a law firm who specializes in the field of social security cases. More or less, the law firm will be more on assisting beneficiaries on getting the right amount of money due to them and other relevant issues. This will give you an in-depth understanding as how the system works, what needs to be done first before a case or an appeal will be filed against the government for giving undue amount to the beneficiary.

Summer jobs and your work experience in a law firm will mold you to become a good social security lawyer. You can never be a full-pledged lawyer if you do not know the last step on how to be a social security lawyer - taking the bar exam and obtain a license.

All you need to do is take months off, review all the laws (state and federal), take the bar exam, wait for the result and if you pass, you can get your license and start practicing law.
