Basic Safety Measures when Using Table Saws

By: David Urmann

A table saw is also known as a saw bench. This is typically used for cutting large pieces of woodworks. It is a table with a fixed machine for cutting wood. It usually runs on electricity.

Using a table saw poses some possible dangers. Therefore, there are basic safety measures you need to comply with before starting to use this machine. For example, before anything else, make sure you have read the manual, especially the warning labels. Also make it a habit to lower your saw’s blade beneath the table when the saw is not being used.

When changing the blades or doing some maintenance on your table saw, always disconnect it to any power outlet.

If you can not prevent it, always wear safety devices when working with your hands. Use a push stick when necessary.

Never place your fingers in the path of the blade. Always be alert because it is a very serious injury if the blade cuts your finger.

Always have your blade guard in place. If the blade guard that came with your saw is not to your liking, you can always get aftermarket guards with various configurations.

The main purpose of the blade guard is to be used like a splitter, preventing cuts on the wood from pinching and closing the blade’s rear, and then, kicking back. However, there are instances when your blade guard can become more of a threat than a safety tool, especially in smaller cuts of less than three inches and cuts with the push stick. In this case, it is best to remove it.

Be careful of wood with a tendency to kick back violently. The strong jolt backward can cause serious injury to the operator. To reduce the kick back, use a riving knife or splitter.

Always wear protection for your eyes. This is vital in operating power tools. When your spinning saw blade’s rotational mass is combined with a huge electric motor, it can result to the unexpected and violent ejection of materials.

Always wear protection for your ears. This is in order to prevent a steady hearing loss when you are using power equipments with no protection whatsoever.

If you have long hair, tie it back. Loose hair can get in the way of the proper mechanism of the table saw and cause it to malfunction. Also do not wear excessively loose clothes. It can accidentally come in close contact with your blade.

You should adjust your table saw in a manner that the blade is completely parallel with the miter slots and the fence. If this is not parallel, your work piece can pinch in between the fence and the blade, inducing violent kickbacks.

If you are already finishing the cut, make sure you push your material way past your saw. If the pieces are not pushed farther, your blade can become violently drawn and caught into your blade, and thus, resulting to kickbacks.

Always be defensive. Table saws are regarded as one of the most dangerous equipment of a wood worker. You need to operate cautiously and think carefully at all times. With variations such as internal forces and structure affecting the nature of the wood, it is usual for these natural stresses to have the blade pinched plus thrown violently.
