Backpackers Insurance

By: Mark Bright

Backpacking is a great experience, whether you are short of money for holidays or not. When the sun is shining and the weather is good, it is extremely satisfying to pick up your bags and go and do something different. Backpacking is becoming increasingly popular with people of all ages, and manages to cater for all tastes. Transport can be done on the cheap very easily now, and as long as you take the stuff you need, including your camera, a cheap and exciting holiday is on the way. Whether travelling by bus, plane, train, car or ferry, if a cheap ticket can be found, then a great backpacking holiday can start whenever you want it to.

There are many things that can be enjoyed whilst backpacking, activities which normally wouldn’t be available or appealing simply because of the climate. Warmer climes mean more opportunities for taking up sailing, surfing, rock climbing or all sorts of other activities. For these activities, there is obviously a level of risk attached; there are a number of things that can go wrong with activities on a backpacking holiday. This is why travel insurance is an absolute must when travelling abroad, especially on backpacking holidays. In some countries even the smallest treatment without insurance can cost thousands of pounds, meaning that a cheap holiday can move very quickly towards becoming hugely expensive. In others, the hospital will simply refuse to treat you unless you can prove you have travel insurance. This is especially true in France, where they are particularly stringent on the rules regarding insurance in hospitals. Travel insurance also gives the possibility of being sent home for free after accidents or other situations of extenuating circumstance.

As with all travel, the travel on a backpacking is not without its own risk. This can be the risk of missing it or it being cancelled if in a place that has unreliable transport, or even, at the extremes, the risk of accidents. This is extremely relevant in countries where the transport is unpredictable, because the travel insurance covers you for missed transport, meaning that one would then be able to get another flight or train or whatever without having to worry about the cost, and it also covers you in case of accident. Travel insurance is an absolute must for backpacking; there are too many uncertainties to not have it. Not having it could cost you more in the long term than the relatively small sum of money it takes to buy insurance, something you would no doubt kick yourself for if you did encounter a situation where you needed it.
