By: Carolyn Elizabeth Blake

If article marketing is new to you, then you will want to read this article to get a simple answer to the question, "What are backlinks?" You may already have heard the term, and understand that they are somehow advantageous.

What are backlinks really? They are the clickable blue phrases in sites on the internet which people click on to go to a page on your website. This article is where you will learn where to put them, how to place them there, and why they assist you.

Where you put these links is at the end of your articles, which you submit to online article directories. Using automatic mass submission for your articles accomplishes backlinking fast. Nearly all directories accept 2 active hyperlinks in a closing signature, which is posted separately at the end of your article, in what is termed a signature box. At the bottom of the box where you paste your article into the article directory, there will be a blank for you to paste your signature. When your article is published, the links in your signature are published too and function as backlinks to your site.

How you attach these backlinks into your article is an easy process of writing a well-crafted call-to-action of 2 sentences containing 2 links. The first link is anchor text - a 2 to 3 word phrase using the main keyword phrase from the article, for example on how to housebreak your puppy, which links to another related article on your site. The second link is the URL link going to your website. Your signature might look something like this -

The term housebreak your puppy would be an anchor text link linking to an additional article on puppy training you posted on your site.
The second link will be in the familiar http:// form. You can find free sites with easy-to-use tools for link creation, and blog post editors have link creation buttons which will allow you to produce live links in both of these formats.

Why do you get traffic from backlinks? When the article directories are crawled by the Googlebot it reads these multiple links leading back to your site. Good quality articles are often be reposted by readers including your backlinks, adding extra instances for Google crawlbots. All these increase your website's authority with Google, assisting your page to appear closer to the top of search engine results.

When you mass submit articles with properly constructed signatures to multiple article directories, you build up interlinking across the net that the search engines interpret as traffic. The more your traffic, the higher your ranking by Google. Offering backlinks on many sites sets up your site's authority well on the Internet. And, when you post on high ranking directories, some of their authority is associated with your website. Now that you have read this article, you understand more where to place backlinks, how to craft them, and why they help you acquire traffic to your website, article marketing's primary point.
