Aurora, Colorado And Its Many Attractions

By: Roberto Garabell

Aurora, Colorado, the city of the "Dawn", is a bustling metropolis just outside of Denver. Beautiful and tranquil, even the name brings scenic images to the mind. If you're going to Aurora on business, you might want to book a couple of extra days. If you're going for vacation, you have the right idea. Why? Because Aurora has more attractions, amusements and overall fun places than you'll ever have time to visit!

Compared to many cities, Aurora is somewhat small, stretching across a mere 142 square miles. However, this "town" has its proverbial fingers in the cooking pots of the world. Have you ever wanted to taste true exotic cuisine, but haven't been able to take a trip overseas? Did you used to live overseas and miss the taste of home?

For the delight of your taste buds, the city offers an amazing 4,000 restaurants. These restaurants serve anything from sushi to steak, barbeque to find dining. Homemade Italian pizza, authentic Chinese, Tai, Cantonese, French and more can be found while roaming the streets. If there's a type of cuisine to be tasted and enjoyed, it's in Aurora. Don't worry - if you're craving a burger and French fries from a name brand fast food chain, you'll find that, too!

Surprisingly enough, the restaurants are just the topping on the cake. If you're looking for something to do, you'll find a little something for every type of interest:

History

Although only a portion of Aurora's many sites and attractions, the city's historical sites, monuments and museums are worth seeing for any history buff. Visit the Melvin School, built in 1922 - a two-room schoolhouse from the "olden days". The William Smith house, built in 1910, was home of Aurora's public schools founder, an Aurora pioneer that raised sheep on the surrounding property. The John Gully Homestead house, built in 1870, is the oldest surviving home in Aurora. Its historical value alone makes it well worth the visit.

Although there are many more historical sites, one of the shining points in any historical tour should include the Red Cross Building and Memorial. Built in 1918, this building was established just as World War I was ending to serve as a hospice for individuals with respiratory illnesses. Although the adjacent hospital, Fitzsimons General Hospital, has been deactivated and is currently being redeveloped, the beehive-shaped river rock still stands as a memorial to officers, nurses and enlisted men who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corp.

Through Aurora's History Museum, families and individuals can enjoy guided tours through the historical sites, which include performances, workshops, demonstrations, living history classes and more.

Sports

If museums and history doesn't interest you, have no fear. Aurora is prepared for visitors just like you! If you're a golf enthusiast, you'll find a dream come true; the city offers seven courses ranging from nine to eighteen holes. Tree-lined and high-plains, for beginners and professionals, nationally ranked or a local favorite, there's a little something for every level of player.

If parks and other outdoor recreation suit your style better, try Cherry Creek State Recreation Area. Twelve miles of unpaved roads gives ample opportunity for nature walks, while thirty-five miles of multi-use trails are perfect for biking, hiking and horseback riding. In addition, you can watch or participate in various activities such as model airplane flying or practice your aim at the shooting range.

During the summer, you can camp at any of the 125 available campsites, some with full hook-ups. A lake gives ample opportunity for boating and fishing, while the wonderful eco system brings sightings of bald eagles, red-tailed hawk, northern harrier and waterfowl for the bird watchers.

During the winter, the park is open to cross-country skiing through pristine snow. Sledding, snowshoeing and snow tubing are also favorite pastimes, for visitors and locals alike. If Cherry Creek isn't to your likely, the Wheel Park provides areas for skateboarding, the Sports Park for other activities, as well as the Aurora Reservoirs and the Morrison Nature Center.

Nightlife

If you aren't too worn out by the end of the day to enjoy nightlife, you'll definitely enjoy Aurora's. The Stampede Mesquite Grill and Dance Emporium may not sound like much by the name, but it's one of the most popular spots in the city for both travelers and locals. In fact, MSN City Search voted it as the #1 Best Country Bar. The open-air mesquite grill provides tasty treats, while the dance floor, live music, plasma TV's, pool tables and the all-important mechanical bull will give your party plenty of things to make a night of it.

Also, keep in mind that if you find Aurora's nightlife a little too tame, downtown Denver is just a hop, skip and jump away. From clubs to lounges, dancing to comedy clubs, breweries to sports bars, you'll find more than enough activity. Bar hopping, strip clubs, late night dancing and more can be found just a mere fifteen minutes from Aurora.

Mix in all the festivals, fairs, amusement parks and scenic views, and you'll find out why Aurora was voted one of America's top 50 places to live or visit. In fact, you may never want to leave!
