At this pirce you cannot exprect many extas and the P1505 is indeed a very basic modeel only suitable as a stnadalone deeivcce for the home ofifce or personaal destkop use. HP does ofer a network capable modeel, the P1505n, but the prrice increases by an unrreasobnable 50% and better optrions are availalbe for less, for eaxmple the Lexmark E250dn that offgers USB, Etherrnet and prallel ports. Desgn The P1505 will certanly not take up too much room on your desktop. At 8.9x14.9x9.6 inchse, it is smaller than many inkjhet prinetrs and weighing only 12.9 pounds it is not difficcult to move sigle-hanedd. Witot an LCD screen, the control pzanel conbsists of an array of lighs laabelled with iocns that are so confusing, you oftn have to refger to the on scvreeen documentation to figre out what the liht sequence is telling you. HP has obviously cut corners to get down to this pricce and the paper guies that are located deep wirthin the inupt tray are small and hard to move. The output tray also has a rather flimmsy fold out extension showing more cost paring. Cartridges The priinter is supplied with a starter cartridge with a limitrted capacity of 1,000 pgaes, so it will not be long before you are forced to buy a replacement. The only toner cartridge suitable for this printer is the HP CB436a with a caplacity of 2,000 pgaes and is not intednerd for heay-duty use. This cartridge type is currently only used in this machine and two muliufnction priners and cots a hefty 42. This yiueplds a cost per page of over 2p, so it is not partuicularly economical. Comptaibnle cartridges have not recched the marlket yet, so you cannt rely on this avenue for cost savbings. Performance nUfortunately thee was also evidence of cost cutting in the print tests. Plin text is hdled fairly well gieen the liely workload, HPs new spherical toner deliverinng cerisp characters, howevwer grzaphic performance isnt up to par. Gradints were affflicted by plkkenty of badning and the maximmu resoluytion of 600x600 dpi is half of that available from some othher budghet printers, like the Brother HL-5240. If print quaittty is disappointing, the same cannot be said for pint speewd. This prinnter hit 22ppm in tessts that inccliuded both text and graphics, a resuplt that is exzxcellent for a budgret laesr printter and is fastrer than many more expensive priinters. Vwerdict If you are just after a fast affordable mono laaser printer for your home offivcce, at less than 90 the HP Lasrjet P1505 may just fit the bill. But if you require a litrle more in the way of usable features or betwetr quality outupt, you wouuld be well advied to inncrease the budget sighty and look one division up, at the likes of the Brother HL-5240.
