Are you Connected?

By: Tom Haye

Social networking is a subject that has been gaining much interest and publicity lately. It seems that social networking is becoming more and more popular. As social networking is all about people, it is something that interests everyone.

Social Networking may not be a concept that you are familiar with. Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one's business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals. A great example of social networking is the hugely popular MySpace. Although the field of social networking is a broad one, it basically consists of two areas: socializing with friends and professional networking. The true power of social networking is the unhindered connection of people with similar interests. The premise of social networking is that any friend of my friend is also my friend. The power of social networking is immense.

There are many different ways to use social networking sites. Social features provided by most community sites are blogging, email, groups, classifieds and forums. One of the amenities provided by some community sites are free chat rooms or conference rooms. It is the easiest way to share photos, journals and interests with a growing network of mutual friends. And you thought social networking was all about text-messaging among bored teenagers. The goal of virtual networking is to “get noticed,” to meet people and to develop relationships on your own time and in your own space.

If you haven’t joined a social networking site yet, I highly recommend that you try one today. The new friendships that you can make online will enrich your life. Most networking communities are free but they do require that you go through a registration process. Once you are registered, you should be able to start contacting other community members. Without a personal profile, it is difficult or impossible to tell what your interests are. Just remember that although online communities are a great place to meet other internet users, they can also be dangerous. Only use your first name in your profile, blog or forum posts. It is also better to use a nearby city instead of the city or town you live in. Be cautious when making contact with other internet users, especially those that contact you.
