Natural yellow diamonds are fairly common amongst fancy colored diamonds, although a lot rarer than colorless diamonds. It is a common false impression that natural yellow diamonds are less valuable than clear diamonds. Nevertheless, Intense and vivid yellow diamonds are really quite valuable although very light or slightly yellow stones are fairly common and have much less value. Yellow diamonds look remarkable when they are mixed with white stones and generally yellow diamonds are set in yellow gold. A 3-stone ring should include white diamonds and the yellow diamond should be set in the center. White stones in trapeze, oval or triangle shapes will make a beautiful setting. Similar to other fancy color diamonds the coloration remains the main criterion that affects how much the diamond is worth, then comes size and of course clarity. Clarity is also important in the evaluation of fancy yellow stones, though this is much less than in traditional white diamonds. The ideal cut for fancy colored diamonds is the Radiant cut. The rarest are the Emerald, Square Emerald and the Brilliant cuts (round shape). The price of these shapes are considerably higher and not only when it comes to the yellow diamonds. This is true for all fancy color diamonds.. Colored diamonds have completely different standards to white diamonds in regards to cut quality. The goal when cutting a fancy color diamond is to intensify the depth and saturation of color while managing to strike a balance between the carat weight and brilliance. It is vital that the stone is purchased with a grading report from a trustworthy diamond laboratory such as GIA, HRD, IGI or EGL. This report needs to declare that the diamond color is "Natural". The report must also state the intensity of color, as well as the color distribution throughout the diamond. The Octahedron is the largest naturally formed octahedral diamond in the world at 616 carats and is a Canary Diamond. This natural stone was found in 1964 in the Dutoitspan mine, located in the Kimberley region of South Africa. The Kimberley Octahedron is still uncut, so the color and distribution grades cannot be given to this diamond. The owners of the mine prefer to conserve the stone in the state is as discovered.
