Are Glucosamine and Chondroitin Better Than NSAIDs?

By: Steve Weber

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the cartilage that can strike both humans and animals. Dogs can suffer from osteoarthritis as well, especially large breeds such as the Great Danes or the Labradors. The more they weight the more vulnerable their joints are.

Not to long ago, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were the most common way to treat dog osteoarthritis. These drugs were efficient in reducing the inflammation and also blocking the pain. However studies show that glucosamine offers great results in reducing the joint pain. Glucosamine mixed with chondroitin have been proven to be even more efficient than the NSAIDs. This treatment was first used in people but it was discovered that it works great for cats, horses and dogs as well.

Here's why chondroitin and glucosamine are more efficient than the NSAIDs:

Both glucosamine supplements and NSAIDs are efficient ways to treat canine osteoarthritis. However unlike the NSAIDs, chondroitin and glucosamine don't have any side effects. NSAIDs can cause kidney, liver and gastrointestinal problems.

The supplements containing chondroitin and glucosamine are treating the source of the pain. Chondroitin lubricates the cartilage, while glucosamine helps on rebuilding the damaged cartilage. So, the disease is healed and the pain disappears with it. Unlike the glucosamine and chondroitin, the NSAIDS only deal with the enzymes that produce pain and swellings.

Chondroitin and glucosamine are 100% natural products, produced from crabs, shrimps and many other shellfish. NSAIDs are synthetic products created in laboratories. So, this is another reason why you should chose the glucosamine treatment.

If you used a chondroitin and glucosamine treatment you will start to notice some improvements in one week if you used a liquid supplement to 6 weeks if you used pills. You can use this treatment on a long term because there will be no side effects. On the other hand, NSAIDs relieve the pain very fast but it is very risky to use this treatment on a long term because it can affect your dog's overall health.

Chondroitin and glucosamine are a lot cheaper than the NSAIDs. For a fifty pound dog, the daily chondroitin and glucosamine dose, costs 50 cent/day which equals $15/ month.
If you were to buy NSAIDs to treat your dog for a month you would have to pay somewhere around $100.

These are some of the reasons why you should use a chondroitin and glucosamine treatment instead of a NSAIDs treatment. There is many more information about this subject that you can find online.
