After the original iPhone came out in 2007, other phone makers have raced on to ALSO make slick, touchscreen mobile phones. But the fact is... Apple haven't just sat still either. Let's have a look at a fight that's brewing between two new mobile phones: the Apple iPhone 3G and the HTC Diamond. Apple iPhone 3G - a Touch revolution It's no secret that on July 11th, a whole new version of Apple's unique mobile phone is on its way; the Apple iPhone 3G. When the first iPhone hit the scene, it got complained about as much as it got revered, the issue being that in spite of there not being any other mobile phones like it, and despite the sheer amount of marketing, it wasn't actually that powerful a mobile phone. Sure, it had a slick, whizzy interface based on Apple OS-X, and a fabulous web browser, but its other features let us down. The camera, for example, was a 2 megapixel unit (with no flash and autofocus) and was, to be honest, useless. And then, it had a massive problem. Ok, you got a great web browser, but unlike other mobile phones, it DIDN'T get 3G, so to get a halfway-decent web connection, you had to play hunt the hot spot. The mobile data solution it had, EDGE, was, is and always will be nowhere near as good as 3G, which is probably why the majority of mobile phones in the UK use 3G and don't bother with EDGE. The Apple iPhone 3G aims to resolve that last complaint, by at last including 3G. Not just any 3G, either, as the Apple iPhone 3G includes the full-speed HSDPA evolution of 3G that's beginning to become the standard connection in in mobile phones, and that gives a data speed of up to 3.6Mbps (yep, home broadband speeds!). Finally, the Apple iPhone 3G has as fast a connection as other mobile phones, so the internet experience on the phone is what it OUGHT to have been in the first incarnation. That's a great thing, because it means the Apple iPhone 3G can compete with other mobile phones on their own turf. To add the cherry on the cake, you also get GPS, and with built-in Google Maps, that adds a whole new world of functions. It's a shame they hung onto the same useless 2 megapixel camera, however... HTC Diamond - is this the mobile to rain on Apple's parade? The Apple iPhone 3G isn't the only touchscreen marvel out there in the business of mobile phones, though. Just about everyone is racing to make their own devices to fight it, but one of the greatest surely has to be the HTC Diamond. Similar to the Apple iPhone 3G, the HTC Diamond is a touchscreen mobile phone that crams tons of features into a sleek, achingly sexy body. Ok, granted, the screen is a lot smaller than the Apple iPhone 3G, but the specs list is far better. And in terms of user-friendliness, it beats just about all other mobile phones, PLUS it is as nice as the iPhone, as HTC have got hold of the Windows Mobile operating system and made it look and feel like... well, like it's no longer Windows... In other words, it's a joy to use! And then you come to the specs; the HTC Diamond really is CRAMMED full of features. The camera is a brilliant 3.2 megapixels, and this one DOES have autofocus and flash, pushing it way ahead of the one in the Apple iPhone 3G. As a marketplace, we've come to want good cameras in our mobile phones, so any high-end mobile phones that don't have good cameras WILL get shouted at because of it. With the web browser, the HTC Diamond uses the amazing Opera Mobile, a browser made specifically for mobile phones, which almost matches the iPhone's browser for sheer brilliance, but the difference between them is like the difference between dating Cameron Diaz or Keira Knightley. You're going to be overjoyed whichever of these mobile phones you get! As if that weren't enough, the HTC Diamond also has HSDPA, meaning it's as fast as the Apple iPhone 3G, and is one of the fastest mobile phones in the world. In a scrap between these two awesome devices, it seems that in spite of the smaller screen, the HTC Diamond is the winner!
