After the original iPhone was released in 2007, other phone manufacturers have raced ahead to ALSO make sleek, touchscreen mobile phones. However, the thing is... Apple haven't just sat still either. Let's have a look at a scrap that's brewing between two new mobile phones: the Apple iPhone 3G and the HTC Diamond. Apple iPhone 3G - a Touch revolution It's well known that on July 11th, a brand new incarnation of Apple's trademark mobile phone is on its way; the Apple iPhone 3G. When the old iPhone hit the scene, it got complained about as much as it got revered, the problem being that in spite of there being no other mobile phones like it, and despite the sheer amount of marketing, it wasn't actually that good a mobile phone. Granted, it had a slick, whizzy interface based on Apple OS-X, and a fabulous web browser, but in other areas, it disappointed. The camera, for instance, was a 2 megapixel unit (with no flash or autofocus) and was, to be honest, rubbish. And then, there was the biggest problem. Ok, you had a superb web browser, but unlike other mobile phones, you DIDN'T have 3G, so to get a halfway-decent web connection, you had to hunt down a hot spot. The mobile data type it has, EDGE, was, is and always will be slower than 3G, which is probably why most mobile phones in the UK have 3G and don't bother with EDGE. The Apple iPhone 3G aims to resolve that last issue, by finally including 3G. Not just any 3G, either, as the Apple iPhone 3G includes the full-speed HSDPA version of 3G that's beginning to become more common in mobile phones, and that gives a connection speed of up to 3.6Mbps (yep, home broadband speeds!). Finally, the Apple iPhone 3G has as good a connection as other mobile phones, so the internet experience on the phone is what it OUGHT to have been in the older incarnation. That's a great thing, because it means the Apple iPhone 3G can fight against other mobile phones on their terms. To put the final cherry on the cake, you also have GPS, and with built-in Google Maps, that gives you a whole new world of functions. It's just a pity they hung onto the same rubbish 2 megapixel camera, though... HTC Diamond - is this the mobile to rain on Apple's parade? The Apple iPhone 3G isn't the only touchscreen device on display in the business of mobile phones, however. Just about everybody is cracking on to make their own devices to fight it, but one of the best is the truly gorgeous HTC Diamond. Similar to the Apple iPhone 3G, the HTC Diamond is a touchscreen mobile phone that crams loads of cool stuff into a slim, desperately sexy body. Ok, sure, the screen is substantially smaller than the Apple iPhone 3G, but the feature-set is far better. And in terms of ease of use, it beats just about all other mobile phones, AND it matches the iPhone, as HTC have got hold of the Windows Mobile operating system and made it look and feel like... well, like it's not Windows... To put it simply, it's a pleasure to use! And then you come to the specs; the HTC Diamond really is CRAMMED full of high-end stuff. The camera is a brilliant 3.2 megapixels, and this one HAS got autofocus and flash, pushing it way ahead of the Apple iPhone 3G. As a marketplace, we've come to want good cameras in our mobile phones, so any high-end mobile phones that haven't got good cameras WILL get complained about because of it. With the web browser, the HTC Diamond uses the awesome Opera Mobile, a browser designed completely to run on mobile phones, which almost matches the iPhone's browser for sheer usability, but the difference between them is like the difference between driving an Aston Martin or a Ferrari. You're going to be overjoyed no matter which of these mobile phones you get! As if that weren't enough, the HTC Diamond also comes with HSDPA, so it's as fast as the Apple iPhone 3G, and is one of the fastest mobile phones out there. In the catfight between these two beauties, it seems that in spite of the smaller screen, the HTC Diamond is the victor!
