Apple iPhone 3G vs. HTC Diamond - is the iPhone in trouble?

By: Mobileshop.com LTD

Since the original iPhone was launched last year, other phone makers have raced ahead to ALSO make sleek, touchscreen mobile phones. But the thing is... Apple haven't just sat still either. Let's have a look at a scrap that's going to kick off soon, between two new mobile phones: the Apple iPhone 3G and the HTC Diamond.
Apple iPhone 3G - a Touch-ing story
It's no secret that in the next few weeks, a whole new incarnation of Apple's trademark mobile phone is on its way; the Apple iPhone 3G. When the old iPhone hit the scene, it got put down just as much as it got praised, the problem being that in spite of there being no other mobile phones like it, and despite its massive marketing, it wasn't actually that powerful a mobile phone. Sure, it had a sleek, groovy interface based on Apple OS-X, and a fabulous web browser, but in other areas, it disappointed. The camera, for example, was a 2 megapixel unit ( without flash and autofocus) and was, to be honest, useless. And then, there was the biggest problem. Ok, you had a great web browser, but unlike other mobile phones, you DIDN'T get 3G, so to get a decent internet connection, you had to play hunt the hot spot. The mobile data solution it had, EDGE, was, is and always will be slower than 3G, which is most likely why the majority of mobile phones in the UK have 3G and don't bother with EDGE.
The Apple iPhone 3G aims to answer that last complaint, by finally using 3G. Not just any 3G, either, as the Apple iPhone 3G includes the full-speed HSDPA evolution of 3G that's beginning to become the standard connection in in mobile phones, and that gives a connection speed of up to 3.6Mbps (yep, home broadband speeds!). Finally, the Apple iPhone 3G has as fast a connection as other mobile phones, and it means that the internet experience on the phone is what it SHOULD have been in the first version. That's a great thing, as it means the Apple iPhone 3G can compete with other mobile phones on their terms. To put the final cherry on the cake, you also get GPS, and with built-in Google Maps, that adds a whole new level of coolness.
It's a pity they kept the same useless 2 megapixel camera, however...
HTC Diamond - is this the mobile to rain on Apple's parade?
The Apple iPhone 3G isn't the only touchscreen marvel out there in the business of mobile phones, though. Just about everyone is cracking on to design their own devices to fight it, but one of the best is the truly gorgeous HTC Diamond. Similar to the Apple iPhone 3G, the HTC Diamond is a touchscreen mobile phone that packs loads of features into a slim, achingly sexy body. Ok, sure, the screen is substantially smaller than the Apple iPhone 3G, but the list of features is far superior. And in terms of user-friendliness, it wins against just about all other mobile phones, PLUS it is as nice as the iPhone, as HTC have taken the Windows Mobile operating system and made it look and feel like... well, like it's no longer Windows... In other words, it's a joy to use!
And then you get to the features; the HTC Diamond really is PACKED with high-end stuff. The camera is a brilliant 3.2 megapixels, and this one HAS got autofocus and flash, putting it way ahead of the Apple iPhone 3G. As a user-base, we've come to expect good cameras in our mobile phones, so any high-end mobile phones that haven't got good cameras WILL get shouted at because of that fact. With the internet browser, the HTC Diamond uses the awesome Opera Mobile, a browser designed completely for mobile phones, which just about matches the iPhone's browser for sheer usability, but the difference between them is only the same as the the difference between dating Cameron Diaz or Keira Knightley. You're not going to complain whichever of these mobile phones you get! As if that weren't enough, the HTC Diamond also comes with HSDPA, so it's as fast as the Apple iPhone 3G, and is one of the fastest mobile phones in the world. In the upcoming punch-up between these two beauties, I'd say that in spite of the smaller screen, the HTC Diamond is the winner!
