Ever since the original iPhone was launched last year, other phone makers have forged ahead to ALSO make sleek, touchscreen mobile phones. But the thing is... Apple haven't been sitting still either. Let's have a look at a scrap that's brewing between two new mobile phones: the Apple iPhone 3G and the HTC Diamond. Apple iPhone 3G - kicking other mobile phones into Touch It's no secret that on July 11th, a brand new version of Apple's trademark mobile phone is headed our way; the Apple iPhone 3G. When the first iPhone hit the scene, it got put down as much as it got revered, the problem being that despite there not being any other mobile phones like it, and despite the sheer amount of marketing, it wasn't actually that good a mobile phone. Sure, it had a sleek, whizzy interface based on Apple OS-X, and a fabulous web browser, but its other features let us down. The camera, for instance, was a 2 megapixel unit ( without flash and autofocus) and was, to be honest, useless. And then, it had a massive problem. Ok, you got a great web browser, but unlike other mobile phones, you DIDN'T have 3G, so to get a decent web connection, you had to hunt down a hot spot. The mobile data solution it has, EDGE, was, is and always will be slower than 3G, which is probably why the majority of mobile phones in the UK have 3G and don't bother with EDGE. The Apple iPhone 3G aims to resolve that last complaint, by at last using 3G. Not just any 3G, either, as the Apple iPhone 3G uses the full-speed HSDPA version of 3G that's starting to become more common in mobile phones, and that gives a connection speed of up to 3.6Mbps (yep, home broadband speeds!). Finally, the Apple iPhone 3G has as fast a connection as other mobile phones, so the internet experience on this beastie is what it OUGHT to have been in the earlier incarnation. That's a great thing, as it means the Apple iPhone 3G can stand shoulder to shoulder with other mobile phones on their terms. To add the cherry on the cake, you also have GPS, and with built-in Google Maps, that gives you a whole new level of coolness. It's just a pity they hung onto the same useless 2 megapixel camera, however... HTC Diamond - do Apple have some competition? The Apple iPhone 3G isn't the only touchscreen device out there in the business of mobile phones, however. Just about everybody is racing to make their own competitors to it, but one of the greatest is the truly gorgeous HTC Diamond. Similar to the Apple iPhone 3G, the HTC Diamond is a touchscreen mobile phone that packs tons of features into a slim, achingly sexy body. Ok, granted, the screen is substantially smaller than the Apple iPhone 3G, but the list of features is far superior. And in terms of user-friendliness, it beats just about all other mobile phones, AND it matches the iPhone, as HTC have got hold of the Windows Mobile operating system and made it look and feel like... well, like it's not Windows... To put it simply, it's a joy to use! And then you get to the specs; the HTC Diamond really is CRAMMED full of features. The camera is a brilliant 3.2 megapixels, and this one HAS got autofocus and flash, pushing it way ahead of the camera in the Apple iPhone 3G. As a marketplace, we've come to want good cameras in our mobile phones, so any high-end mobile phones that don't have good cameras WILL get complained about because of it. With the internet browser, the HTC Diamond uses the amazing Opera Mobile, a browser made specifically for mobile phones, which just about matches the iPhone's browser for sheer brilliance, but the difference between them is like the difference between dating Cameron Diaz or Keira Knightley. You're going to be overjoyed no matter which of these mobile phones you have! As if that weren't enough, the HTC Diamond also has HSDPA, so it's as fast as the Apple iPhone 3G, and is one of the faster mobile phones in the world. In a scrap between these two beauties, I'd say that despite the smaller screen, the HTC Diamond will be the victor!
