We’re big fans of the Samsung range of netbooks, as the Samsung NC10 and its follow-up, the Samsung N110, truly define what a netbook could and should be. So, can this latest version, the Samsung N130, really live up to expectations? Check out our review of the Samsung N130 and find out for yourself… Thankfully, great usability, a long battery life and low price help it to stand out from the crowd. The 10.7 x 7.4 x 1.2-inch, 2.6-pound N130 is almost the same size as the N140, but has a shape reminiscent of the pebble design on the Samsung Go (N310) minus the grainy, rubberized surface. Instead, a matte plastic graces the lid and chassis-this is no fingerprint magnet like the N140. We still like the rounded edges on this design and appreciate the more subdued logo. Unfortunately, the N130 only comes in white with two different colors for the lid-Slate Blue and Pink-and no chrome accents. Like the N140, the N130’s power switch now sits on the front of the unit and is a slider, not a button. And just as with the N140, the six-cell battery only raises the unit about a quarter of an inch in the back. All this is wrapped in a chassis that's both elegant and durable. Unlike many of the more recent releases, such as the Acer Aspire One 532h or Asus Eee PC 1005PE, the N130 eschews all varieties of glossy plastic, instead opting for an entirely matt black finish. This might not catch the eye so readily, but the nicely tapered lid and body give the N130 an air of class that belies its bargain basement price. While writing this review and watching video with the N130, we noticed that the netbook became slightly hot during use. After leaving the system idle for five minutes, we measured heat on the touchpad and underside at 89.0 and 96.0 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad reached 94.0 degrees, but the space between the G and H keys got to 99.5, and the underside notched 101.5 degrees, which is really uncomfortable. Keyboard and Touchpad Instead of the chiclet-style keyboard last seen on the Samsung Go, the N130 has the same great keyboard as the N140 (and both the N110 and NC10). As with earlier models, we’re fans of the layout (93 percent of full size) and placement of the slightly textured keys. The keyboard is comfortable to type on with good travel and a nice spring, which allowed us to reach our full typing speed right away. At this low price, it's nice to see that a one-year trial version of Microsoft Office software is included. Providing you with plenty of time to save up for the full version, it allows you to stay productive in the meantime, at no extra cost. Verdict Some Customer Reviews: Hi - I bought an N130 & installed Windows 7. The rest is pure empiricism - I tested & it “works”. The machine repeatedly did not boot, giving “Memory errors”. I swapped SIMS to no avail. I swapped N130, and had the same problem. I put it down to drivers, particularly since the W7 drivers apparently are inherited from Vista. Then I noticed that it ALWAYS booted when NOT connected to power - in other words it gave no problems if I booted from the (4-hour - rubbish!) battery. I’m posting this here because I have found no other reference to the problem anywhere. Eoin I have just purchased a Samsung N130. It’s my 1st mini computer. My first impressions are first what a superb piece of engineering construction.BUT, this was wiped out by my disappointment with the equipment documentation!! Who on earth requires a 60+ page booklet on so-called “Safety Instructions in multiple languages telling you amongst other things “how to sit in front of a computer”?!! And yet Samsung in their wisdom produce only a 5 page folder “Installation Guide”, again in several languages and no comprehensive Users Manual!! BUT,yes I hear Samsung Marketing and Sales excutives protesting that there is one - ON THE HARD DRIVE!! What stupidity.
