Prague is a gorgeous city, the capital city of the Czech Republic and the largest city in the Republic. Prague is an ancient city which served as a commercial trading center during early 9th century when camels and wagons would meet to trade salt, pots and spices in Eurasia. This mystical city is filled with cathedrals, bridges and spires reaching for the skies. It straddles the magical Vltava River in which swans swim in search of princes and Queens. Prague was damaged very little by the ravages of WWII and thus the medieval center of the city offers cobbled streets, stone-built courtyards and bohemian facades of commercial buildings. The commercial center of Prague oozes with restaurants, museums, art galleries and shops. The nearly 1.2 million citizens of Prague live in tiny homes and garrets. They travel on weekends to the outskirts of town to garden in their allotted plots of land and for some fresh air. The city of Prague is commercial, economic, political and cultural in nature with an interest in its beauty for everyone. It is a number one spot for travel in Central Europe. For tourists enjoyment and cultural benefits, The Charles Bridge was built to accommodate pedestrian traffic and to join the Lesser Side to the Old Town of the city of Prague. It spans the Vltava River and offers statues of Saints along its length. The next most spectacular spot to visit is the Old Town Square which was once the market place of the 12th century. It was the locale of executions of traitors and of the installation of new government councils during its harsh history. Lovely old clocks adorn the walls and towers of the Old Town Square. One more fabulous tourism site to see is the Prague Castle which was originally constructed in the 9th century. From its original form of a heavy wooden fortress, the castle has been transformed into its adorned and combination of surfaces over the years during four different eras. The castle now has three courtyards and has always been the place of the Czech rulers and their families. It will take a full day to visit it properly if you wish to see it on your trip. Prague was once in the clutches of communism but now has been returned to the capitalistic flock since the fall of the Iron Curtain. Tourism is a very lucrative commodity in Prague whether or not it entices the traveller to the many wooded parks or to the art galleries. If one wanders away from the well travelled roads and lanes, you could find yourself in the finest labyrinth of walls, nooks and crannies, courtyards and homes of the citizens themselves. This is where the true greatness of the city lies.
