An Indication That Social Networks Are Not All They Are Cracked Up To Be

By: Aubrey Moulton

If people are sick and tired of the social networking arena and spending time online there is now an application that will wipe the slate cleanbanish all trace of your networking. The Suicide Machine is an online application that erases an individual’s accounts from time-consuming social networks. This machine got under way in December, 2009, and so far there have been over 1,000 go through an online demise and over 80,500 friendships on Facebook are now history, as well as 276,000 tweets.
The identity suicide generator is trouble-free; users list their login information and pledge to "commit" suicide online and it will completely wipe out all the users’ information from Facebook, Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn and more. This is a painless fix instead of spending a lot of time manually deleting all the profiles and filling out questionnaires required to close the accounts. Users can just commit to the suicide and it will execute the tedious job in their place.
So all that remains after the machine has erased and individual’s info is just the profile but no personal data. Users so far have seemed to appreciate it. There are even testimonials of the service such as "Good bye, cruel world" to "Thank you microblogging. You are, in fact, totally useless." Apparently the machine has become very popular and thousands are awaiting their online extinction. Co-creator Walter Langelaar said "Our server is so busy processing the requests."
However he also warns that "resurrection is impossible. After you agree, it is gone for good." And when it occurs a cyber memorial arrives for the former social networker. The most attractive characteristic of this service which has evidently made it so popular is how simple it all is. All a person has to do is select the commit button and everything’s gone. When individuals delete everything one by one, the fact remains that the information and connection isn't erased. The data only moves to an unpublished status, but by using the Suicide Machine all the private information is annihilated from website servers.
Not everyone has greeted this with open arms. Apparently, Facebook has already sent an email to the Suicide Machines founders demanding that they "cease this activity immediately" citing a violation of user's privacy. But Suicide Machine founders point out that these users voluntarily handed over their login info and paid for their product. Facebook briefly banned the server from admission to the site earlier this month but these viral suicides are ongoing. It is easy to see that Facebook is aware of the probable threat this product poses.
Facebook already has 350 million users and deleting a few hundred won't change anything. But Facebook fears it will begin as a trickle then spread like wildfire. It seems that as social networking has grown larger and larger more people are quickly tiring of it and looking for a simple way to end it. Many have realized the Suicide Machine is the answer.
