Alternate Sources of Energy-Greener Options for Homes

By: Roberto Garabell

Energy is required to run the various types of machinery and equipment that make life easier for human beings. Oil exploration and natural gas placed these energy sources at man's disposal, but they cannot last forever. Their supply is almost fixed and the demand ever-spiraling upwards. The mismatch between demand and supply has led to sky-rocketing prices and the huge bills individuals have to pay for using them, has made many look at alternate sources of energy that would cut costs, be environmentally friendly and yet be as effective. These would also help in conserving energy for the most essential and crucial requirements. Such sources are gaining popularity as the world becomes more aware of damages to the environment and feels responsible to take corrective action. Many systems have been invented to serve as alternate energy sources but many of these are beyond the financial reach of most homeowners. However, extensive research has led to some cheaper options coming up and these can be used to power a section of the home if not all of it. The biggest advantage being that these sources take the load off the non-renewable energy sources. They can be used with the local power grid, stepping in for part of the functions and letting electricity take over when these sources run out temporarily.

One source of energy available in abundance and waiting to be harnessed, especially in warmer nations is solar energy. It can be used to generate solar electricity, and it is not a cumbersome procedure at all. All that one needs to do is install solar panels on the roof of the house or building, to absorb the heat from the sun. The biggest advantage of his is the drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, which will reverse the global warming phenomenon. The reduced, even minimal electricity bills would also be a welcome relief.
Solar energy has multiple uses and it is powerful enough to run machines and gadgets, water pumps and battery chargers at home.

Another source of alternate energy is the wind that is free and abundant in certain areas. It can be harnessed to serve as a source of energy strong enough to power a household. It requires setting up small-scale wind turbines that catch the wind to produce electricity. It can be connected to the power grid and for as long as the turbine produces electricity it can be used, and the regular electricity can take over when the wind turbine stops.

These are just some of the alternative sources of energy but some of the most ideally suited for powering homes.
