All-natural Strategies To Help You With Morning Sickness

By: Gen Wright

"Morning sickness", as nearly any pregnant woman will tell you, is a misleading term; while it is true that the morning is the most intense time for nausea symptoms, they can strike at any time during the day.Nausea, vomiting, or both, usually sets in around week 6 with full recovery around week 14 or 18; most women do experience some symptoms (75%), and a very few unlucky women will continue to have those symptoms through to the end of their pregnancies. While it is true that morning sickness is a common condition, that doesn't mean it's not an unpleasant one which deserves attention.

The causes for nausea during pregnancy are not clearly understood, but is likely caused by a combination of hormonal, psychological, and physical factors that will vary from woman to woman.Among these is hCG, or human chorionic gonadtropin (the pregnancy hormone), which causes many of the changes in a pregnant woman's body; also likely to blame are increasing levels of estrogen, which is linked to a pregnant woman's sensitivity to smells.

It is also believed by some researchers that women whose bodies normally react to stress with vomiting or "feeling sick" are more likely to experience morning sickness as a reaction to the stress of pregnancy. There is a great deal of common wisdom regarding natural (non-medication) nausea relief; although these strategies have not necessarily been scientifically tested, some women swear by them.

Many women try to eat several times during the day, always keeping something in their stomachs; you can also keep crackers by your bed for right when you wake up in the morning.Wait for a half hour or so, still laying down, and then try getting out of bed - your nausea may be much decreased this way. It's a smart rule of thumb for pregnant women to take their time in the mornings, and not get up right away.

You can experiment with high-protein versus high-carbohydrate meals as a nausea depressant; you should, however, try to stay away from rich and spicy foods as a general rule.Do not force yourself to eat or be around foods that cause nausea, even if that means having a rather limited diet.Food which are hot tend to have stronger aromas, which can cause nausea; therefore, eat mostly bland foods and try to have them at room temperature or cold.

While you should have lots of beverages, try not to drink much at meals so you don't get overfull; try drinking sports drinks, cold carbonated drinks, and anything with real ginger, like ginger ale or tea.

Keep in mind that nausea triggers can be unrelated to food - like motion sickness or heavy odors (such as perfume); you might also consider techniques like using an acupressure wristband or even hypnosis.Morning sickness is stressful and can make for a very unhappy pregnancy; for this reason, feel confident to ask your doctor about anti-emetic (anti-nausea) medications that might work for you if none of the natural remedies provide relief.
