ANPA stands for American Newspaper Publishers Association, and it is an organization that was combined with six similar organizations in 1992. When they did this, they became the Newspaper Association of America, which is found at www.naa.org. For the purpose of ANPA to XML conversions, ANPA refers not to the organization itself, but instead, it refers to ANPA-1312, which is a 7-bit news agency text markup protocol that was published by the NAA. This text markup was and is still used by all news agencies in order to be able to standardize the content and structure of the news articles the writers prepared so that the transmission to news agencies and newspaper publishers when smoothly. While this protocol is still used today, and the Associated Press is a strong supporter of the protocol, as are other large newspapers in North America, its use was superseded during the 1990s by the News Industry Text Format or NITF. The NITF is a more familiar XML based markup system. What and Why XML? What is XML? Well, XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language and it is used in many computer programs. The XML markup language is a language used with documents containing structured information. A "Markup Language" is a specific type of coding system that is used to identify different structures in a document, such as a webpage or, a newspaper article. The XML specification defines a standard way to add the markup code to documents. This code can be something such as a section heading of an article, the footnotes, information in a Database table, or any other text and information within an article. This coding allows for document automation and information organization, for example. More specifically, XML is used by many applications to facilitate the displaying of information. For example, XML is used in web browsers and word processors. However, the conversion from ANPA-1312 to XML is accomplished using not a straight translation or conversion software. Instead, conversions are done using an XML parser and requires knowledge of the "schema" or markup language. Software is available that automates the conversion process, but as the use of ANPA-1312 decreases, the software becomes less available. One available package is "FingerPost, and another is "Sportwire.” Both of these software packages are highly specialized and very technical. The newer standard, NITF is rapidly being adopted and the use of ANPA-1312 is being phased out, however and soon, NITF will be the only way of doing things.
