AEG could be ending its affiliation with Ticketmaster

By: Greg Jackson

Ticketmaster is one of the challenges with visiting concerts these days. Everybody talks on the subject of how costly tickets to concerts have become thanks to all the fees imposed by Ticketmaster Entertainment.

It appears as though Ticketmaster may become a bit less powerful now, though. AEG is thinking about replacing Ticketmaster with Tickets.com (it is owned by Major League Baseball and Veritix Inc). However, AEG states that it may modify its mind if Ticketmaster and Live Nation merge into one corporation.

If Life Nation and Ticketmaster to combine, then roughly all the live performances in the United States will be ticketed through Ticketmaster and everybody can pay ludicrous fees if they want to go see their beloved acts live.

AEG accounts for just under 10% of all of Ticketmaster’s sales.

It seems as though AEG has a little bit of time to think about it however. The account to Bloomberg claimed that the contract between the two companies doesn’t even conclude until July 2012.

I have not bought a ticket from Ticketmaster since I was 14 and saw Nsync in concert. Since then, all of the concerts I have seen have been in bars and tiny venues that did not have a ticketing system like this, or they were free. I recollect, even then, that the tickets were quite costly and the costs that were tacked on to each ticket were just outrageous. I believe that a $20 fee for “Ticketmaster fees” is too much when the ticket only costs $30.

Earlier this summer Live Nation in fact cut the costs it charged for tickets for the reason that people weren’t attending concerts like they once did. It was in part for the reason that tickets were too costly and also for the reason that people didn’t have the cash that they once did.

I wish that sites would sell their own tickets rather than going through a third party system like Ticketmaster. A sufficient amount of people have the internet now that no one has to wait in lines outside their neighborhood retailer waiting for tickets to go on sale (which is what we were required to do when the Nsync tickets went up for sale…it was in 1999 when I bought the tickets so give me a rest!).
