A pet painter who abides by definite realism

By: Fernandes Julia

Many a family pet will live forever on the mantel because of the special talent of this female artist. For every single master, he would think that his pet is the best in the world no matter if it is a dog, cat, white rat or pony, and she does agree to this. The proud masters have to go through so much coaxing and cooing, making them go to the camera so they can remember them, and have their likeness retained on the mantel. But once the shutter captures them, a pet yawns or another droops his ear. Poor little Willy was eaten up by shadows around him while one of Blue Boy's feet was nowhere to be seen. The photographic remembrance of the pet that was planned to be a masterpiece was a flop.

This female portraitist solves this woe by getting a snapshot of the beloved pet showing his best sides. Using a photograph to work from is a common practice among today's illustrators. Pet lovers would often bring in off centered, fuzzy or poorly lit photos of their pets but then a well experienced artist can manage to work with such faults and still achieve a great masterpiece. Animal paintings make her enjoy so much whereas people subjects give her a hard time.

The object is to capture the spirit of the subject. Staring at and judging her portrait would reveal emotions from happiness, sadness and other things. The outcome of the portrait makes her happy. Snapshots that have human beings as subject would not be far from how some pet photos are where lighting and composition leave much to be desired while there is very little character or personality exuding. Worse, the snapshot's quality won't even allow enlarging a print to framing size and be good enough to be flaunted on a wall. The portraitist comes in at this point. She generates small close up photos that would become portraits of undeniable warmth, intimacy and even personality.

She changes color and tone to make things more effective and she is able to do this thanks to her creativity. She retains the facts before her but she can artfully create subtle enhancements. Customers dictate what medium she should use in depicting their semblances through excellent portraits. For instance, she has created the local sheriff's portrait by combining watercolor, pen and ink. Most of the artworks she's done uses such a procedure.

If you look close enough, you will find that the shading of the portrait is made of so many minute dots. More or less, the sheriff picture boasts of 100,000 dots. The rapidograph pen she used for the effect was demonstrated. She compares this to pens with old ink which splatters and this is by far more convenient to use especially in creating details as this can be steered to any direction quite easily. It boasts of smoothness and the ease in manipulation.

Every artist develops his or her own style or he is not an artist. There is no doubt that this lady uses definite realism in working. It has steadily developed from her school days, when her favorite subjects were horses, to her present preoccupation with portraits. Through various art shows and fairs, she has reaped knowledge. So much knowledge came from many of the art shows and fairs she participated in.

The college library, a private collection or perhaps a Legion Hall would showcase her work so inquiries would start to come in. And this is how her paintings grew highly popular throughout the Midwest area. Doing portraits of people and their pets has given her unparalleled satisfaction and this was something never brought in by commercial artworks or paintings of nude people resting on velvet.
