A look at riding jodhpurs and how they got their name

By: Rich J Stevens

Riding jodhpurs are now an everyday part of a horse riders wardrobe. Riding jodhpurs are widely available in horse riding clothing stores both on the High Street and in online stores. But how did these garments come about and why have they become some popular as horse riding garments? Below we take a closer look at the origins of jodhpurs and how they evolved to be the horse riding jodhpurs we know today.

For those who do not know, riding jodhpurs are tight fitting trouser like garments that cover the legs from waste to ankle. However, in the city where these garments were originally worn, Jodhpur in India, they were not as snug fitting as their modern day equivalents. The original jodhpur is only tight on the leg from the knee down. Above that it is flared up to the waist. So slightly different from the all hugging riding jodhpurs style we see today!

The jodhpur first arrived in Britain in the late nineteenth century as almost immediately became a military garment. But it did not stop there. Before riding jodhpurs came into play the garments in adaptations of their original form began to be used by others. No doubt many of us would recognise the garment having been worn by aviators, motor cycle cops and even film directors. Who would have thought that the original garment from India would have made such an impact on fashion throughout the ages.

Over time the jodhpur was redesigned and eventually a design version came about that is the familiar riding jodhpurs we see today. As mentioned above, riding jodhpurs have now become an essential part of many horse riders wardrobes. Jodhpurs are mostly worn with cropped riding boots, which funnily enough are often called jodhpur boots. Riding jodhpurs are very similar to riding breeches which are also a very common piece of horse riding clothing.

Riding jodhpurs are made of a variety of materials ,but most make use of elasticated fabrics such as Spandex to help the garment fit snugly and comfortably over the wearers legs. As riding jodhpurs are used in exercise it is important that the materials used in their manufacture allow the skin to freely breathe and for excess moisture to evaporate. Because the horse rider is in constant contact with the saddle and horse you will notice on riding jodhpurs there are reinforced areas like the seat and inner knee area. These reinforced areas of the garment permit more comfort for the horse rider who has not alternative than move freely with the movements of their horse or pony.
