A New Way of Making Animal Portraits

By: Juan Hill

A program where six local artists will demonstrate their individual approaches to animal painting will be held in conjunction with a museum's animal friends exhibit. After each of the artists creates an animal theme painting in the museum galleries they need to tell the visitors about how the style and techniques they used were able to help them capture the image and spirit of the animals in the paintings. It was an executive director from the museum who said that people of different cultures and backgrounds find special meanings in animals.

What a buffalo signifies is spirituality and a dove is a sign of peace. Good omens are associated with red tailed hawks while dogs signify a cherished friend. All over the world, animals continue to be the favorites because since the beginning of time from petroglyphs to cave murals to oil paintings to jewelry they have been the subjects of artistic endeavor.

What this female artist considers herself to be is an avid explorer of ideas, styles, and techniques. The way she developed her methods was through a long career of teaching, in workshop presentations, publications, and consulting. Listed in the west's who's who is she other than being a founding member of a local society of watercolorists.

One of the female artists came from southern California and before moving to her hometown in 1983 she studied art and watercolor. When it comes to the themes she was working with, these involve landscapes and floral studies plus people and animal portraits. When it comes to her style, the director attributes this to her aggressive use of pigment as well as her ability to push the watercolor medium into works of unusual size without sacrificing the brilliance of transparent watercolor.

At a famous college was where one of the artists studied not to mention at the art center of college of design in Los Angeles. In Springfield, Illinois and other local and regional venues is where each of the artists will be creating presentations and publications.

A period of study at the University of California in Los Angeles followed the fourth artist's graduation with high honors from New York's school of art. What she received at Washington school of art's 12th annual competition was an award for the best of show. According to a reviewer, her work is full of psychological poignancy as parts of a famous director's film thereby giving a precious glimpse of human drama.

It was at Kansas university school of fine arts where the fifth artist earned her painting degree. Considering that she paints in her own interpretive style of realism, she provides the viewers with a feeling of the atmosphere and the subject's mood. Juried exhibitions, a number of one person shows, and a traveling exhibition shown at the Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC called the Kansas landscape are where this artist has been able to participate.

What culminated her study of art and refinement of painting skills was the eight years the sixth artist spent studying Chinese brush painting with a noted Chinese painter. Considering this style of painting, lifted or erased during creation, she adapted it to the northern New Mexican environment. As the director of the museum said, they are honored to welcome these distinguished artists from the society of watercolorists to the museum and their commitment to artists and designers working showing up was reiterated.

The current animal friends exhibition has been specially selected for the delight of audiences both young and old. This will be a workshop visitors will enjoy as the artists create portraits of their own special animal friends. In 1992, the society of watercolorists was founded and it has a mission to encourage the appreciation as well as the production of professional quality watercolors on a local and national level.
