Pearson International Airport is a major international airport that serves Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is also known as Lester B. Pearson International Airport or simply Toronto Pearson, which was named after the 14th Prime Minister of Canada who also received the Nobel Peace Prize. It is located just 27km or 17mi northwest of Downtown Toronto in the city of Mississauga, Ontario. The Toronto Pearson is the primary airport for a densely populated region in southern Ontario which includes and surrounds the Greater Toronto Area better known as the “Golden Horseshoe”. Over 32.3 million passengers were handled here at the Pearson International Airport in 2008, making it the largest and busiest airport in Canada. There were also 429,262 aircraft movements in that same year, making it the 22nd busiest airport by aircraft movements in the world. Daily non-stop domestic flights to all major and most secondary cities across all provinces of Canada are operated from Toronto Pearson by several airlines. International flights are also available with 74 airlines to over 100 international destinations. These destinations include United States, Mexico, Europe, Central and South America, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and even Oceania. Toronto Pearson was also recognized and selected by the UK-based Institute of Transport Management as the best global airport in 2006. There are currently two operating terminals at Pearson International Airport – Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 handles domestic, international, and transborder flights, and features three piers. Piers D and E includes 38 gates and Pier F, also known as “Hammerhead F” because of its enlarged end, has 23 gates and also replaced terminal 2 and the Infield Terminal. Terminal 1 opened on April 6, 2004 after the old T1 was closed and demolished to make room for additional gates at Pier E. The second operating terminal in Toronto Pearson is the Terminal 3, also known as “The Trillium Terminal”, opened on February 21, 1991. It was originally built to offset traffic from the old Terminal 1 and 2, as well as a private venture and a state of the art terminal that includes a US Customs pre-clearance facility. A hotel and a parking garage are conveniently located across from the terminal, which is connected by a bridge walkway. Like any other airports, various modes of transportation are made available to passengers at Pearson International Airport. Airport Shuttle Coach Buses between downtown locations and Pearson Airport are operated by Pacific Western Transportation. There are also pick-up locations for taxis, limos, out-of-town bus/shuttle services, that transports to downtown Toronto, cities throughout Ontario, and even Detroit. However, although taxis that are licensed in Toronto can deliver to Pearson, only airport-licensed taxis and limos can pick up at Pearson legally. Transportation from Pearson International Airport to cities, towns and villages throughout Ontario, and even into Michigan in the United States, by way of out-of-town small bus, van and shuttle operators are also supported. The Toronto Pearson is also near an existing railway line; however, it is still not currently served by trains.
