6 Tips For A Better Work-life Balance

By: Gen Wright

Are you a juggler, the manic multi-tasker who can listen to a conversation, fiddle with the blackberry and write the shopping list at the same time?

If so I'm talking to You.

I'm guessing that counts for 99.9 per cent of the females out there. We're known for it frankly and we're secretly quite proud of it .It makes us feel valued and effective, it gives us the reason to get up in the morning, all those lunch-boxes to sort, the dish-washer to stack and that killer meeting to prepare for. Life these days seems to accelerate with every year that goes by and that's not just because we might be getting older . We are a manic society, a fast society in which we are conditioned to believe that faster is better, instant is excellent and real-time mobile communication is the answer to all our problems.

Contrary to popular opinion and practice, being busy ,efficient and multi-tasking is not officially good for us. It plays havoc with our stress tolerance, our creativity and our concentration levels.

The Law of balance reminds us that everything we do we can overdo or under do and that if the pendulum of our lives swings too far in one direction then it will inevitably lead to disharmony. The more we are able to find the middle ground the better we will be able to navigate success and happiness in all areas of our life.

6 tips for leading a balanced life.

1) What do you really want?

We leak energy and become drained and frustrated when we get into a pattern of pleasing others and living in accordance with their standards rather than our own. Are you clear of your motives and your underlying passions and purpose in life?
What are your values and are they in sync with your actions?
Are you being truly authentic and speaking your truth?

Getting clarity on what you truly want from your life is the first critical step to leading a more balanced and meaningful existence.

2) Who are you surrounding yourself with?

Are you stimulated by your peers , colleagues and clients. Do you have great true friends who have your best interests at heart? Are you in the right environment to best utilise your talents and gifts?

3) Are you thinking the right way?

There is substantial evidence that the way we think can have a profound and a lasting effect on our mood and motivation levels . If you are one of life's pessimists then you will need to re-programme your thoughts to expect the best not the worst and to swop those habits for more encouraging self talk. Focus on what has been going well rather than how far you are from your goals. See obstacles as opportunities, remain flexible and open to possibilities. Recognising and being grateful for what you have is a great way of getting things in perspective.

4) Listen to your body.

Self care is essential to restore and maintain well-being and balance. Are you sleeping well? What are your eating habits? How would you describe your energy levels?
Taking time to exercise and look after yourself is an essential component to balanced living.

5) Set healthy boundaries.

Real life and business is interconnected but that doesn't mean you need to give up your privacy. You need boundaries so you can feel generous without feeling depleted and available without feeling drained.

6) Nourish your Soul.

Review your emotional and spiritual health. Do you need to forgive someone or let something go?
Are you learning something new ?
Are you fully engaged in your work?
Are you connected?

Living a balanced life is all about total integration of your real or whole self in all aspects. Often we wear two masks our career/work mask and our home mask but eventually this will come unstuck. Being in balance is all about how you work, what you value and finding ways that can match these values rather than compromise them.
