5 Things to Put in Your Personal Development Plan

By: Mabon Dagian

A new year is here again, and as per usual we're called towards deep reflection. Have I lived the past 12 months faithful to my values? Was I effective as an employee, parent or spouse? Can I bear to look at myself in the mirror, or do I still tend to do things that give me shame? Is this the best that I can be, or do I still have room for improvement?
Questions! Questions! Questions!
Don't worry. If you're not yet the perfect adult you've always envisioned you'd become, that's okay. No one is flawless; we're all works in progress! (A relief to know, isn't it? And yes, it rhymes too.) What's important is that we're constantly aware of areas in our personality that need polishing, and we're willing to take the steps to wipe off some of the dirt and grime. We must endeavor to have a Personal Development Plan, and update it on a constant basis.
"A Personal Development What?!?"
Plan. A Personal Development Plan!
It's understandable if the term is unfamiliar. While making plans for future finances or monthly appointments is traditional for most people, few bother making plans regarding their personal growth. Many assume that personality is fixed. Others are too wrapped up in practical concerns --- work, money, family --- that they can't afford to watch out for their own needs. But as productivity and happiness depend a lot on becoming a more mature person, it's worth investing time planning who you want to be when you grow up. a little more.
What are the things that you can include in your Personal Development Plan? Consider the following:
Bad habits you want to unlearn and good habits you want to gain.
Log down all your bad habits, as well as what you plan to do about them. Has your wife been complaining of your inability to pick up after yourself? Well, it doesn't hurt to learn a few organizing tools. You'll never know; you and the missus just might find more interesting things to do when the bedroom is not as cluttered as it is right now.

Your mental, emotional and spiritual needs.
We all have needs outside of food and water. For instance, every person needs to have someone to talk to when they're depressed or overwhelmed. Are all your non-physical needs being met? If the answer is no, then it's time to plan on how you can be a better nourished person.
Opportunities for enrichment.
Just because you're a banker doesn't mean finance, trading and investment is the only thing you can read about. In fact, it would help you become a better rounded person if you expose yourself to other disciplines and field of interest. Read up on New Age Spirituality, why not? You may not "get it", but you'll have food for thought at least.

Ways to better fulfill your various roles in life.
Most of us wear more than one hat, with some hats more feathery than the others. If you want to be a more adjusted individual, you need to strive for some balance in the many roles you play. Are you neglecting being a son in your attempts to be the company supervisor? Are you spreading yourself too thinly because you're a board member in every neighborhood group? Make a plan that would help you negotiate all your responsibilities --- and help you enjoy all the perks of being you. There's nothing that says you can't do everything, you just can't do everything all at once.

Skills that jack up your net value.
Lastly, plan to develop those intangibles that will give you the edge in life. Time management, networking, powerful communication, etc. may not seem like they will amount to lot at first, but if you notice not all smart people are successful. You need a bit of everything to make it in cutthroat business, and there's nothing keeping you from gaining a few skills.
So how about it? Start your Personal Development Plan right now.
