Any person trying to live a simplistic, responsible and frugal life, the reduction in water consumed is almost always an indirect benefit that goes unnoticed. Water saving measures does save a lot of water by reducing wastage in many different methods, but habits that coincide with frugal living saves water indirectly in surprising quantities. You would have of course reduced water consumption by taking up several water saving measures and some of your efforts to live frugally would also have caused some indirect water savings. The following are 5 choices that in addition to saving you money will reduce your consumption from the already depleting resource of water in the world.
Firstly, you could consider cutting down on major vacations as air travel can cause a huge consumption of water. Something that many people don't know is that a short flight can consume thousands of gallons of water. A trip by road can also lead to a consumption of as much as thirteen gallons of water for the production of a single gallon of gas. While far away trips are no doubt great fun, taking a vacation close to your home can cause a great deal of savings in money as well as water.
Secondly, you must think of cutting down on your coffee consumption. Behind every cup of coffee that you consume there is a heavy wastage of water if you take into account the amount of water that is used to grow the coffee shrub. If you stop consuming coffee, it would be the healthiest and most frugal option. But if you could even consider reducing your coffee intake by one cup a day, you could be saving at least 50 gallons of water.
Purchase recycled items - If you decide to reuse what belongs to you and recycle whatever possible, then the need to spend paper and electronics which consume heavy water will reduce during production. The money spent on heavy water for recycling products is much less than newly manufacturing them.
Ditch Unnecessary Apparel - Considering that every kilogram of cotton requires 832 liters of water, think twice before purchasing fashionable clothes. Live simply and conserve water by wearing clothes for many years and buying from thrift stores.
Stay away from animal products - Eat less meat and dairy products to save water. Water spent on growing such animals can be much more what you spend on growing vegetables, because animals consume more water than plants.
