4G mobile phones – are you ready?

By: David5 Maine5

While you may already be hugely impressed by the whiz bang multimedia broadband capabilities of the latest generation of mobile telephones, these are going to seem like creaking dinosaurs by the time that 4G mobile telephone technology becomes the norm. And it doesn’t stop there!

Mobile telephone operators and manufacturers are already hotly anticipating the next generation of tech-wizardry. And what can we expect to be there, at the end of the 4G rainbow?

First of all, your mobile telephone reception is going to be much, much, better, due to the fact that 4G mobile telephones will be able to tap into a number of different transmitters at once, and pick the strongest one at any given microsecond. At the moment, your phone can only transmit and receive to a single transmitter at any given time, which can lead to glitches when you wander between transmitter radii, but these will be a thing of the past once 4G phones become the norm.

You can basically expect your phone in the future to be able to do everything your current phone can do, a hundred times better. You can chuck out that dusty old quad-core IBM PC, too, that’ll be a doorstop by the time the fourth generation of mobile telephones comes along!

Surfing the web will be vastly improved due to faster speeds and larger screens, and you’ll be able to shop online, using your mobile phone as a kind of electronic wallet. So you can finally throw that away too! You’ll also be able to watch silky smooth, high definition, video and TV in real time, and have the capability to download and store hundreds of DVD-quality movies and 1,000s of 24 bit/96KHz uncompressed sound files, consigning mp3 players and portable DVDs to the dustbin of history.

All well and good, but when is it going to happen? The initial idea was to bring in 4G technology in Japan in late 2010, but due to the unprecedented increases in consumer demand for mobile phones, and the technological advances of recent years, it looks it is going to happen long before then, and should be appearing in a mobile phone showroom near you later this year or early in 2010, initially as an expensive luxury product. However, if the past twenty years have showed us anything, it’s that it is not long before these initially expensive luxury products tumble in price, thanks to the simple maxim that greater returns are to be had on the mass market, and we can anticipate that the fourth generation of mobile telephones will be given away as freebies with the majority of phone contracts by 2012, as is currently the case with 3G phones from networks such as Vodafone and Three.
