3 Tips For Using A Basement Dehumidifier

By: Monique Neustenberg

When you are looking for a few simple solutions in basement waterproofing for your home, one of the best ways to eliminate condensation on the walls, lower the humidity level, and get rid of that musty smell, is by using a basement dehumidifier. Here are 3 tips for getting the most out of any unit you decide to use.

1. Get The Right Dehumidifier

This first tip is one of the more important ones. Getting the right size of basement dehumidifiers is critical. If you have a 2500 square foot basement and you are trying to use a small machine that is designed for a single room, then you're not going to have much of any success. You may need more than one unit in some cases.

The key is to get a large enough model for the job. Yes, the larger the size the higher the cost, but also the higher the quality. It will last longer and even use less energy than a smaller machine. This is because bigger models will not have to run all the time and work at getting out the moisture like the smaller units do. The result is less money going to your energy bill.

2. Put The Dehumidifier In The Right Place

This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised at where many homeowners will put their machines. Place it in an open area where there are no boxes or other items sitting up next to it. For ultimate performance you want to have the air flowing freely to the unit. Some models will instruct you to place them against a wall in the basement, so be sure to read the users manual and understand what type of unit you have.

The other big key in putting it in the right spot is to allow for water drainage. All dehumidifiers come with a drainage container that you empty out, but what happens if you don't get to it in time, or you forget it, and water goes out onto the floor? If you have a basement drain hole you can sit the unit right next to it so the overflow goes down the drain and not on the floor. Or, you can attach a drain hose and run it over to the basement drain.

3. Keep It Clean

This is another important tip that will have a big effect on the performance of your machine. Be sure to keep it cleaned and properly maintained. Every dehumidifier will have coils that can get very dirty over time. It seems like they attract dirt like a magnet at times. Wipe them down from time to time and keep the vents clean from cobwebs and dust as well.

These tips will go a long way in keeping your basement dehumidifier running well and removing the moisture out of your basement.
