In adults however, the impetus for learning the piano comes from the fact that they have a desire to learn and it is not something that has been forced on them. You'll find that after a number of days of regular practice that your fingers appear to behave better as the communication between the brain and the fingers is enhanced with practice. After a few days you will get accustomed to playing and you won't have to think about it so much. You will find it much harder to play after you have had a few days off from practicing.

Make yourself realistic goals

When you are learning the piano, particularly if you are learning by yourself with a home study course then you have to set yourself a few pretty rigid goals so that you can truly advance. Set yourself a few long term goals and some short term goals. A good goal for the short term might be to perfect a particular piece or maybe even just a progression of chords. Rehearse it repeatedly daily until you are satisfied that you have learned it. A longer term goal would be for instance, to reach a certain level of playing, to pass an exam or to get to a level where you are able to accompany a singer or other instrumentalist. You do not need to set deadlines and have time limits for your goals, just having the goals is generally enough.

Don't worry about making mistakes

You will make mistakes when you practice and also when you perform, this is only natural, it can be very simple to get bogged down and to focus on perfection. There are times however when fluidity is more useful than perfection. You should pass over the mistakes and carry on playing. Don't pay much attention to your mistakes and they will either disappear with time or they will turn out to be so apparent that you will be forced to do something about them. These ideas ought to make it simpler for you to practice and will assist you to become a top piano player.
