3 Spill Control Solutions Every Workplace Should Have

By: William Penworthy

As far as spill control is concerned, there are many different spill kits and absorbents available, but often it can be too easy to overlook some of the dangers and risks, and fail to provide adequate products or facilities for dealing with them, or at least, being unable to deal with effectively, quickly and with minimal inconvenience and disruption. Spillages do occur, and in any workplace there will always be a level of danger as far as spillage is concerned. From cups of coffee to oil, from chemicals to water, there are many different possible spillages that might occur, and each poses specific and unique dangers which can lead to injury, accident, or plain inconvenience and disruption.

Here are three spill control solutions you should consider purchasing for your business, each of which could drastically improve your ability to deal with a spillage situation quickly and effectively, reducing the time it takes to deal with the problem, minimizing risks and enabling normal work to resume as quickly as possible.

The first of the spill kits to consider introducing into your workplace is the body fluids spill kit. Of all the possible spillages likely in a workplace, the one which is more frequently overlooked is bodily fluid. Yet every workplace will have a significant number of people, and as we’re all 90% water, there’s a fair amount of fluid sloshing around any workplace environment! On the serious side, however, bodily fluids represent a number of very serious dangers. There is, of course, the perennial problem relating to infection, and as it’s not always possible to be certain whether there is a risk of infection, it is vital to make sure that when dealing with a spillage which includes bodily fluids of any kind, appropriate safety equipment is used.

Bodily fluids may include blood loss, and this is particularly important to deal with appropriately immediately. Blood loss can create problems regarding infection for both the patient and for those dealing with the spillage. More than that, by not being able to deal with the spillage immediately because, perhaps, you do not have the right equipment, other personnel nearby may be at risk without even realising it.

To protect them you may decide to cordon off a large area of the building, and this can lead to inconvenience and disruption, and in some cases has even resulted in fire escapes and fire routes being unavailable for significant lengths of time. Bodily fluids spill kits include several key products, including products designed specifically to absorb the fluids quickly and effectively, preventing the spillage from spreading any further.

Bodily fluids may also include urinary waste, and again it will be essential to make sure that this is dealt with quickly and effectively. In this case, fumes may quickly render an area environmentally unpleasant or even hazardous, and with an increasing number of workplaces recycling air across large open spaces using air conditioning units, it can mean that a large number of people may be adversely affected if the spillage is not dealt with properly and quickly. Bodily fluid spill kits therefore represent an essential spill control solution which should be present in any working environment.

Another spill control solution which it is wise to have readily to hand in almost any working environment will be a general purpose quick sock, which can be used for a wide range of spillage types. Socks and booms are long tubes filled with a special material which can absorb large quantities of most liquids, holding them safely to prevent leakage and seepage. By placing a sock or boom along the perimeter of a spillage you are able to quickly limit the spread of the spillage, giving you time to deal with the liquid itself without worrying about further problems or dangers.

In cases where a spillage occurs in a corridor, hallway or other access route this can be vital to make sure that the danger or risk to employees is reduced quickly, since the spillage itself may take longer to clean up and deal with. A general purpose quick sock is able to be used in many situations from personnel accidents where bodily fluids may be present to simple accidents such as spilled cups of coffee or a dropped glass of water.

Finally, consider purchasing a traffic mat, a specially designed material which can be quickly laid over many types of spillage, or even over areas which may have become damp through people walking in from outside, where snow, ice or rain may drip from clothing on to a floor. Traffic mats can be available with special backing which not only allows for absorption of liquids, but also provides a solid grip to the floor, allowing people to traverse the corridor or walkway without fear of slipping or skidding.

These three spill kits should be in every workplace, providing a spill control solution which can save time, reduce risk, and give you the chance to deal with spillages in an appropriate manner, without rushing, using inappropriate equipment or endangering anyone.
