2009 World Series of Poker Part II

By: Shayne A. Sherman

(Satellites)

Last time we discussed the upcoming World Series of Poker which begins on May 27. The World Series of Poker main event winner will get more than four times than the winner of the Masters Tournament. Did you get that? at least $8 Million will be given to the winner. It’s the single largest cash purse in all of sports, bar none. We discussed that the great attraction of the World Series of Poker is that anyone can win. All you have to do is put down $10,000 and you are participating in the World Series of Poker Main Event.

Let’s be realistic, who truly has $10,000 to put up to participate in a poker tournament? Some people certainly do, but for most of us that’s a big chunk of change to have to go through a field of 6,000 players. But wait! What if we could enter the Main Event for just a $100? Now I have your attention.
Every World Series of Poker has a series of super satellites running nearly continuously. The super satellite system includes one table, 10 player, sit ‘n go tournaments, that start as low as $100. Now remember they are “winner take all” events So ten players put up $100, $1000 prize pool, winner gets $1000. With that money a player could enter a $1,000 buy in super satellite. That tournament has all the same rules except the stakes are tenfold. It’s another “winner take all” event This time however, “all”, is $10,000, enough to play in the Main Event.

Poker life, however, is more than the Main Event. A good patient poker player can make a good living in the smaller buy in tournaments. The World Series of Poker has events starting at $1000. If you were to win two $100 super satellites you have enough to enter a $1500 bracelet event.

Last year’s event #3 was a Pot Limit Texas Hold ‘Em tournament with a buy in of $1500. There were only 713 players in the tournament and it paid down to 72. 72nd place paid $2,725, a good return on investment. David Singer won the tournament and walked away with a gold bracelet and $214,000. Just getting to the final table paid $19,000.

It’s a good idea to start small and work your way up. $10,000 is a lot of money to chance when there are so many other tournaments that make you life changing money. If you play good solid poker and the poker gods are watching over you, a $100 super satellite could lead to much larger things, like a World Series of Poker bracelet.

In closing, brush up on your single table play, including short table play. Figure out how to shorten your range of starting hands and playing position. Try the World Series for just $100.
