1.) Optimizing a site for the wrong key phrasesThe initial move in any search engine optimization campaign is to select the optimal keyword phrases for which to optimize your website. If you choose the wrong keyword phrases, all the effort and time in attempting to get a site to rank high will be lost. If the keyword phrases you selected have no-one looking for them, or if the chosen key words don't attract relevant targeted visitors to your website, then what benefit will you get from ranking high.2.) Putting too many keywords in the Meta Keywords listSites which have fifty keyword phrases entered in the Meta Keywords tag (hidden at the top of the page), in the hope that by providing all the possibilities in the key words in the Meta Keywords tag they will win a higher ranking for those keyword phrases, are wasting their time. It won't help. Despite popular opinion, the Meta Keywords tag have hardly any importance any more in regard to search engine ranking is concerned. Thus, simply by inserting keyword phrases in the Meta Keywords tag, a website won't in reality be able to get a higher ranking.3. Repeating the same key phrases too muchAnother common mistake is to repeat target keyword phrases in the body text pages and in Meta Keywords tag. Because so many have attempted using this tactic in the past and many still do, the search engines are tracking this constantly. They can penalize a website which repeats keyword phrases in this manner, called keyword stuffing. Just repeating the key words repeatedly will no longer work.4. Creating many semi-duplicate doorway web pagesAnother myth is that because the algorithm of each search engine is different, they need to create different types of pages for different search engines. While this is great in theory, it is faulty practice. Anyone using this practice, will soon accumulate hundreds of extra pages, which soon become a nightmare to manage. In Addition the pages are targeted for different search engines, they will all actually wind up being almost the same. Search engines are often able to detect if a website has created common doorway pages, and may delay or even ban the website from their index as a result. Instead of building another page for each search engine, create one page which is optimized exclusively for one keyword for all the search engines together.5. Using Hidden TextHidden text is special words placed in the same color as the background color of your web page, so it appears masked to visitors to the page. Let's say the background color of the web page is white and if white text is added to that web page, it is invisible and considered to be hidden script. Many web designerss, in order to get high rankings in the search engines, used to try to stuff their pages with these extra masked keywords. However, there is a specific limit to the number of additional key words anyone can repeat in a page before it starts to sound distorted to human readers. So, to be able to conceal it from the human viewers, but still keep it keyword rich, many webmasters added keyword phrases with the same color as the background color. This allows that what the search engines can see the keyword phrases, the human viewers cannot. The search engines have long since discounted this technique, and ignore the pages which have this kind of text. They may also block the entire website if even a single page in that website contains such concealed text. The problem is that some search engines may end up blocking sites which did not intend to use concealed text. Let's say there is a webpage with a white background and a table with a black background. Put some white text into that table. Although visible to human visitors, the search engines can decode this to be concealed text, not taking into account that the background of the table is actually black.6. Creating WebPages With Only PicturesSearch engines only understand text - they don't read graphics. If a website contains a lot of graphics content and very little text content, it is less likely to get a top listing. To improve the rankings, the pictures must be connected to keyword rich text so that the indexing robots will understand what is in the website.7. Ignoring the NOFRAMES tag in the case if your site uses framesMany search engines can't decode frames. For sites which use these frames, search engines only count what is within the NOFRAMES tag. Many web designers make the error of adding something like this to the NOFRAMES tag: "This site uses frames, but browser does not support them". For the search engines which don't process frames, this is all thecontent that they will index, which means the probability of a high ranking are much lower.8. Using Cloaking of PagesPage cloaking is a way used to show different webpages under different circumstances. People usually use page cloaking for two purposes: A) to conceal the proprietary source code of their specialized pages from others or B) in order to prevent human viewers from seeing a webpage which looks great to the search engines but does not otherwise look good to humans. The problem is that when a site uses this cloaking way, it prevents the search engines from being able to view the same webpage that the users are likely to view. And if search engines discover something else, they can not be certain to deliver relevant results. When a search engine detects that a site has using cloaking, it will most likely ban the website forever from their index.9. Utilizing Automatic Submission ToolsTo take a shortcut, many web masters use on-human software or service to submit websites and webpages to search engines. Submitting your site manually to search engines takes a lot of time and automatic submission softare speed that up. But search engines don't like software submissions and may often ignore them. But this is altering as software becomes the name of the game.10. Submitting too prolificallySending out too many webpages at a time to the search engines can be a problem, and may trigger search engines algorithms to ignore most of the webpages which have been sent out. Submitting one page per day to the search engines is sufficient. Although some search engines accept more than one page per day from a particular domain, there are a few which will only accept one page per day.
